While it defies U.S. government, Apple abides by China's orders

Apple Inc. has come out swinging in its pitched battle with the government on its home turf.

But when it comes to its second-largest market, China, the Cupertino, Calif., company has been far more accommodating.

Since the iPhone was officially introduced in China seven years ago, Apple has overcome a national security backlash there and has censored apps that wouldn't pass muster with Chinese authorities. It has moved local user data onto servers operated by the state-owned China Telecom and submits to security audits by Chinese authorities.

The approach contrasts with Apple's defiant stance against the FBI, which is heaping pressure on the company to decrypt an iPhone that belonged to San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook.

That's because Apple needs those Chinese kids with their tiny Chinese fingers to assemble iPhones.

How fricking stupid!!

What Apple is being asked to do in the US is establish a precedent that will be abused for years to come.

What Apple is doing in China is just a Tuesday afternoon.

Your business adjust according to the market conditions of a region. So there may be some differences between operating in the US VS a communist country. What a fricking shocking realization!

Well what do these security audits entail? That's kind of a big deal.

If I have a problem with Apple on this - it is this apparent hypocrisy. They're only for privacy and encryption where that is a right and is allowed.

A truly principled company wouldn't do business in China at all, under such onerous restrictions.

I still support them (reluctantly) in their current stance with the FBI, but I agree the charge of hypocrite is fair, and perhaps worse, they are a tyranny facilitator - not just concurring in, but actively enabling the Chinese government in their surveillance efforts, even if nominally reluctant to do so.

Apple has already stated that the FBI is asking the company to do something even the Chinese government hasn't asked for.

And FTR, there is nothing on the locked phone - at least nothing of significance.

They destroyed the phones that had recoverable intel - that's like a huge red flag.

Censoring apps on phones is not equal to allowing backdoor access to all iphones.

A more apt comparison would be if China wanted access to all iphone users' personal data. Until you find out Apple is doing that, you don't have a point.

Right. So they operate according to the law and rules of that particular market.

Is that Cooks primary responsibility as Apple's CEO? To expand the company only to places that share the principles of...whomever?

Or is it to obtain market share and maximize profit?

and "Principled Corporation" is kind of an oxymoron in itself considering the nature of capitalism.

Once a company reaches a certain size it's pretty hard to be principled, especially if those principles interfere with increasing shareholder value.

So you also have a problem with Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook, Google, as well as numerous other companies.

They all support Apple's stance against the FBI, yet do business in China.

It's almost as if all businesses exist to make money and attempt do so within the political climate of the countries that their product is sold in.

How dare Apple hold the United States to a different standard than China.

Yes.

And Apple's stance is not a principled one. They are trying to protect their product's value.

I support it, regardless of their motivation, because it is the correct one in the grand scheme of things. It is not to protect the terrorists - it is to protect the rest of us.

I must have missed where our Constitution dictates what happens in China. Can you point me to that Article?
