Overrated- Bob fricking Dylan and also Bruce Springsteen
Bob Dylan's voice is like the noise I make when I've eaten too much pulled pork and I'm sitting on the toilet dying.
As for Springsteen, I watched the old "We are the World" video the other day and everything was really nice you had all these really talented singers like Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, and Michael Jackson along with a ton of others. BUt then along comes Springsteen and he just wrecks it with his grungy grumbling voice and then he has a duet with Michael Jackson and it's just so bad holy shite.
Underrated Rush (Alex Lifeson)
So Rush is always hated by Rolling Stone for some reason and they aren't even ranked in the top 100 artists, and then Alex Lifeson is definitely not the 98th best guitarist he is way better. But it confuses me why they have the band ranked so low, but then Neil Peart is the 1 drummer, Geddy Lee is the 4 bassist, and Alex Lifeson is at least ranked.
I hate Rolling Stone.

Underrated - Morrissey/Marr. One of the great songwriting duos in the last 40 years.
Overrated - Kurt Cobain. I realize Nirvana was significant and all that, but he and the band have never really done anything for me. Some of those stupid guitar lists have him near the top too which is laughable.

Overrated: Joan Jett
She's cool and everything, but not much of a career to speak of. She's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Underrated: The Kinks
Should be mentioned with the Beatles and Stones. Most people only know Lola and You Really Got Me.

I have never heard anyone say that he is a phenomenal musician or vocalist.
What he is an elite songwriter and lyricist who is deserving of all praise he receives and then some.

I think you have to consider that people are appreciated for different reasons.
Nobody ever claims that Dylan is a great singer, but there are some things he does that nobody else should even try to do. As a songwriter,he is untouchable, good guitar player too. He's been a household name for 50+ years.
Springsteen,great songwriter and showman,good musician.
If you are into great harmonies and vocals(I suspect that is your interest),these guys aren't going to be your thing.
Aren't you glad people like different things?

Underrated- Rainbow w/Dio
Fans of hard rock and metal might be well aware of the bands contributions to heavy music, but most general music fans seem to be unaware of just how monumental those first three albums were, specifically Rising & Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. They pushed the boundaries of progressive heavy music and should be just as lauded as Rush and Uriah Heep for doing so.
The lyrical subject matter of the fantastical, mythical, and legendary, coupled with brutal guitars, drums, and vocals, was something that had never been achieved before in music.
Overrated- Pearl Jam
For a band that contributed one of the most the most perfectly-timed records to mainstream music, Ten, they have not done shite since. Sure, they have a couple of good singles spread out here and there, but for a band touted as the torch-bearers of modern rock, alongside Foo Fighters, I just don't see what all of the fuss is about.
They are a phenomenal collection of musicians and I respect the work each of them has done prior and apart from Pearl Jam, but damn has their legacy leeched off of the success of their debut.
I would argue that neither Vitalogy or VS. could hold a candle to In Utero or even Alice in Chains' Jar of Flies EP.

IMO Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones are overrated, but its all a matter of opinion.
I think Jerry Jeff Walker is underrated, but a part of me thinks he likes that. I don't think he would be who he is if he had more fame.
I will also add The Jayhawks to the vastly underrated grouping.

I want to downvote you for Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen being overrated but I totally agree with you about Alex Lifeson being underrated. Dude is frickin awesome and is rarely mentioned when discussing Rush. So.... I'll abstain from voting.
