just finished watching this short documentary. It is about the death of Kathleen Peterson. The state prosecuted the husband for the murder of her while he claims she fell down the stairs. Recently a new theory is out that an owl attack caused the death.

Definitely interesting. Also, this guy Michael Peterson is a strange guy regardless if he killed his wife or not. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this and what they think...

Absolutely do yourself a favor and do not watch it. Or, only watch it if you want to see an actual version of the filmmakers being dishonest.

The a-hole in The Staircase is definitely guilty. The owl theory is fricking preposterous.

Here's what happened: 2 French brothers made a documentary called "Murder on a Sunday Morning" about a black kid in Florida that was railroaded by the justice system. It was legit.

They then became ultra SJWs on a mission - desperate to keep uncovering the rot inside the US justice system. The Staircase is hopelessly biased and dishonest. I read a book about the trial and was instantly outraged at what was left out of the documentary. Real things, not innuendo like MaM.

tl;dr version - the a-hole definitely did it, the filmmakers lied repeatedly by omission and this is a very poor comparison to MaM.

can you give the cliff notes about the book?

I understand the movie was totally slanted. But, against your point, I found making a murderer hopelessly slanted as well.

Yes, the owl thing is pretty ridiculous. I get that.

But what is the deal here. The guy is out on bail again and was granted a second trial.

I want to think the guy did it. What is the story?

What about Capturing the Friedman's?

Staircase was pretty good.

And has anyone ever made a movie on the Fatal Vision book ...the green beret doctor who was tried for killing his wife in the late 60s and blamed it on crazy manson-like hippies..

That was a crazy book with the fact that the parents of the decreased supported the husband.

Admittedly, I still haven't seen "return to the staircase" or whatever.

I'm forgetting the minutiae. The book is called Written in Blood.

Michael Peterson is the opposite of Steve Avery - intelligent, accomplished and a master manipulator. All manner of hard forensic and blood evidence is left out of the series. It's ridiculous.

Unsure about a movie, but there was a TV miniseries on it back in the 80's - don't really remember much from it.

Thanks, looks like it got great reviews.

The book was great by Joe McGuiness who wrote, The Selling of the President.

On Fatal Vision:

“A provocative, dramatic investigatory saga…..filled with insight and amazement.”— Los Angeles Times

I get that. They really don't show anything that the prosecution has evidence wise. However they claim she was beaten on the head till dead. Every single other case of murder where someone was hit in the head there was either fracture or brain injury.

This was the first case going back fifteen years where they didn't find a skull fracture or brain injury. That was 250 cases.

I have heard that they had money problems and she was going to lose her job. So he killed her for the life insurance policy.

However I can't seem to get over the fact that they are saying she was beaten yet every other murder similar to this, 250 cases, had either skull fracture or brain injury.

Didn't he get another lady to "fall down stairs" to death? Must have been two owls.

Michael Peterson almost certainly killed his first wife in Europe.

Such as his claim that she was alive when he called 9-11 when the evidence shows she had probably been dead for hours.

Suspicion surrounding Elizabeth Ratliff's deathEdit

Elizabeth Ratliff, the friend of the Petersons who died in Germany in 1985 (and mother to Martha and Margaret, Michael Peterson's adopted daughters), had also been found dead at the foot of her staircase with injuries to the head.

the dried blood doesn't necessarily mean that she died hours ago.

I did wonder what time they approximated her time of death to be. Because you are correct that he said she was alive when he called.

As to whether or not he killed the woman in Germany, well, I just don't know. There was so little evidence all you had was the report from the pathologist in durham saying she was killed.

It seems odd that no one would have suspected anything in Germany...

Going to watch the staircase II next. It is about his appeal and his being granted a new trial.
