I have read all day about every theory on why we are underachieving and it really boils down to one thing.

FREE THROWS.

When we make our free throws, we win close games (a la aTm). When we miss free throws, we lose close games like last night.

Its as simple as that. It has been the Achilles heal of our program for a few years now and has cost us more than a few games including last years tournament game against NC State.

I'm still gonna cheer the team on in every game and hope we win enough to go dancing.

Meh. Coaching still needs to be much improved. Even if we do make free throws.

free throws are not solely the player responsibility. When they are inconsistent it is the responsibility of the coach to ensure players are practicing enough and shooting with proper mechanics

This guy knows

and he played at LSU! give him a call

The lack of FT shooting certainly doesn't help, but if you want to find LSU's Achilles heel look no farther than these numbers:

Kenpom efficiency ratings:

Adjusted Offensive efficiency national rank: 27 of 351 (2nd in SEC)
Adjusted Defensive efficiency national rank: 135 of 351 (11th in the SEC only ahead of Auburn, Mizzou and Tenn.)

There are going to be nights where the ball just doesn't go down on offense. Last night was one of those nights. However, you can overcome those nights and grind out wins if you can keep the opponent from scoring. LSU can't. If this team was even just marginally better on defense, they find a way to win the game last night (even with the FT woes). If you are horrible on defense though (and LSU is) you rarely can afford to have a bad night on offense

High expectations that we were going to have 3 super star incoming freshmen and one of them was Lebron James. Well, you can barely even notice 2 of them on the basketball floor and the other only cares about how many rebounds and assists he will have.

The Real Reason is Help Defense. Last year our guards were allowed to let in dribble penetration because they knew they had a shot blocker, Jordan Mickey, there to impact the shot. This year we allow way too much dribble penetration and are horrendous at help defense. Victor nor Simmons take pride in their help defense and clearly don't want to pick up fouls in quick-whistle college basketball times...Frankly, I don't blame them either because some of the fouls called are just terrible

Some nights, as someone already said, the offense just won't be clicking...Look at Bama's last 6 games as a perfect example . Yet, they are winning because of defense

Agree completely

there are always talented teams that under perform. Esp when they are young. Does anyone think this team would not dominate next yr if everyone returned.

It's an issue obviously.

But, the real issue is that this team can't defend the drive.

Sure free throws are a problem but you didn't watch the game last night if you think that's the only reason we lost.

As stated in about 47 other threads before this one, no it isn't. Ask any player or any coach, including Johnny-whether you like him or not-and they'll tell you the same. It's never that simple.
