Is LSU ever going to spend the money on a real basketball coach?

Listen, I wanted Johnny Jokes to be successful even though I didn't like the hire from the beginning, but at 16-10 this year, I have seen enough to know he is not (nor ever will be) a top-level coach. There are a lot of teams in college basketball with far less talent doing way better. I thought coming into this year the tournament was a sure thing and I thought the PMAC would be back to some of the old seasons when it was rocking. Sure, there have been a few games this year where the crowd was involved, but it is not enough. If the administration would just spend the money and get someone better the program could be a lot more.

You'd have to start with hoping politics don't get in the way this time.

Unfortunately, the LSU brass doesn't care. You get what you pay for most of the time. We have had John Brady, Trent Johnson, and Johnny Jones. No one who is serious in professional or college basketball is banging the doors down to get these three coaches on their staff. at their school. What does that tell you. LSU is cheap and they don't care about basketball.

I'd take a coach with John Brady's basketball IQ right freakin now.

Two Sweet-16 Appearances doesn't make someone a top-level coach.

The answer is:

His new contract with LSU is estimated at $1 million to $1.2 million annually — nearly twice the reported salary he received at Stanford.

Understood. My intention was to say that we need to spend the money AND get a top-level coach for the money.

Johnny Jones has improved LSU each year he's been coach at LSU. I'm not sure what else you want him to do.

You mean one that knows what free throws, playing some sort of defense, and time-outs are ????
Sure hope so....

Yes, as soon as they pay off the new Tennis Facility from the proceeds of Tennis ticket sales.

This may shock you because you don't follow LSU basketball much but Trent Johnson was a top-level coach at the time.
quote:
In his nine years combined as a Division I head coach at both Stanford and Nevada, he has won 159 games and taken teams the last six years to post-season play, including four NCAA appearances. Both his 2004 Nevada and 2008 Stanford teams reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and he has been named Coach of the Year in both the Western Athletic Conference and Pac-10 Conferences and was a finalist this season for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award given at the NCAA Final Four to the Division I head coach who best represents the high standards of the coaching profession.
PS - I'm happy to see that you are back posting on the Rant. I was worried about you since you haven't posted in like a month. Must have been that good stretch of basketball that knocked the wind out of your sails. Any who, glad that you are still alive.

I thought to myself this morning that some rantard was going to say this today.
Since when LSU was doing a coaching search in April of 2012, Avery Johnson was available and all. He wasn't coaching in the NBA or anything.

They are spending a huge amount on a bad coach. It isn't about how much you spend, but how you spend your money. LSU gave a raise to an unproven Jones and this is what happens. Guy was a bad hire and while he's put up W's given he's had more games per season than any other LSU coach, he's yet to win a conference title nor a legitimate tournament game at LSU, yet his predecessors all did it despite how "bad" they were.
He's simply a bad coach that can recruit, and his poor coaching actually hurts his talent.

So if they fail to make the tournament this year, he will not have improved this season. It will be.......the "decline".....
