I know when I started watching back in 2009 or so, Wikipedia was really helpful in trying to figure out how all these competitions worked. I would encourage any noob to make use of Wikipedia when trying to figure out what's going on.

Pretty sure Dundee and Dundee United are the closest. 0.7 miles I believe.

Really appreciate this thread. I've had questions on how the leagues work and this helps. With help from Wiki, I think I figured out Champions league. Let me know if I'm off.
Each European country has it's own league. The top teams in each of these leagues get to compete in the Champions League. That's how teams like Arsenal and Barcalona get to play each other. Is this correct? Also a few more questions:
What is the name of Spain's league? This is where teams like Real Madrid and Barcalona play, correct?
Is Champions league played every year? What's the name of the cup / trophy? I'm assuming that this should be considered top honors for a club to win, right?

1.) Yes
2.) Spanish Primera or La Liga< most common in USA.
3.) Yes ... real, atletico, Barcelona, sevilla and valencia just to give some examples.
4.) Yes Champions League is the Top Honor on a grand stage, but most teams want to win there countries top division title.

Yes each member country of UEFA that has a pro league is a participant. UEFA uses a formula to determine how many teams from each league get to participate (and if they are auto qualify into the group stage or have to play a play-in)

La Liga

Yes. Starts in August/September with play in round, then group stages in the fall, then knock out rounds which are going on right now culminating in final usually last weekend of May

European Champion Clubs' Cup
Yes it is considered the top trophy a club team can win

thanks guys.
A little off the subject, but still regarding soccer. What qualifies a player to represent a country in the world cup? Birth? Current resident? Or pick what you want?

I could be off, but if you have a passport for a country then you can play for them. I think any country of which you are a citizen. Also if one of your parents/grandparents were a citizen of a certain country. All of that has to be determined by the age of 18, unless you are a refugee. Someone correct any part of what I just got wrong.
Basically, there's quite a few different ways to become eligible for a country.

It's looking like I may be in NOLA the first weekend of March. Watching the North London Derby at Finn's just seems too good to pass up. What time do they open for the 6:45 game?
Open by 6:30 but I'll bet there will be outdoor pregame drinking by 6am
That day is going to be insane over there...I will be in prime form by the time Der Klassiker starts at 11:30

thanks for the thread. My interest in soccer has grown and grown since a high school coach let us leave school early to watch the World Cup several years ago.
My problem has been that I'm not emotionally invested into anyone so it's hard to really be all in as a casual fan.
I'm moving to Germany and am excited to get over there and see which team grabs me. Bayern Munich will only be a few hours away. Kaiserslautern FC is in the 2nd German league and is smaller, but would be the home team.
Anyone have any info on either club? Visited the stadiums, been to matches, etc?

What should I know? How affordable are season tickets? Looks like a pretty decently sized stadium. Does it fill up? Do you get that crazy European football fan experience?

I paid about 330 euro for a season ticket near the ultras section. If you have a family id suggest the family section which tickets are easy to come by unless its a huge match.

Its a good size, and gets loud when its packed. I'm talking louder than college football but with half the amount of fans.

The last three to four years not so much b/c they have been in the second division.

If you sit with the ultras yes. FCK fans are known as some of the craziest in Germany. Even with lacking attendance it still gets wild. For the big matches its bat shite crazy.
