This afternoon at about 520, I was in my backyard in Oak Ridge and heard the unmistakable call of a purple Martin in flight. Looked up and 5 scouts overhead. I brushed out and Sevin dusted my houses and commenced to raise them. Before I got the first house completely bolted up, three of the scouts were inside. Low tonight 39 degrees..so am glad that I was there to hear and respond. As the scouts soared around, having reached their destination in my back yard after a long flight from Central America, I marveled in the moment and realized that the scouts were probably born in the houses to which they had returned.

So....get your Purple Martin houses cleaned and raised to welcome your flock back!

How do you keep wasps and those big Mexican hornets from building nests in the Martin houses after the weather gets warm?

Saw some in Avoyelles, but none in Rapides yet. Should be any day.

Shot one of those with my BB gun when I was a youngn. My paran who likes attracting different birds to his bird houses was PISSED. Didn't realize their relevance at the time.

Our first to the yard was Sunday in Ellic. Saw bass on a bed Saturday. Redbuds are blooming.

I'd love to have a Martin house but from what I've been reading it takes at least a 40 foot diameter clearing around the house or they won't use it. Larger if any of the trees are tall (pine for one). Does anyone have martin houses closer to trees that are successful? Supposedly the Martin's won't use them because hawks will hang out in the trees and pick them off.

The first Martn "scouts" (they are not really "scouting") showed up in the Florida panhandle a little over a week ago. There have also been a couple of sightings of Swallow-tailed Kites which is very early for them.
