Santa Fe is one of my favorite places in the country. Such a unique, vibrant city full of culture. Taos is great as well.

It is like Mexico but newer.
It is also like Texas but without the annoying texans.

You would only want to live in the Northern areas (Sante Fe, Los Alamos, or Taos). Sante Fe would be the place for younger people to move to; Taos is a beautiful but small town mostly filled with retirees and the locals (and my parents lol); Los Alamos is a wealthy government town built around Los Alamos National Lab (LANL). It doesn't have the distinct culture you'll find in Sante Fe or Taos, though.
No matter which of those towns you go to, you have to be an outdoors person to really enjoy it. Camping, fishing, hunting, skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, rafting, hiking... it's all there.

Hard to sum up a whole state in a short post but here is what I have seen.
NM can be beautiful and I have ridden off road through the state several times. When you get off road it really feels like being in the Wild West.
But it is pretty remote in many parts. Big cities like ABQ have a lot to offer and I like the architecture. There are many National forests and recreation areas and lots to do outdoors.
I have a buddy that lives in Taos and it is a nice area and beautiful scenery. He has an Adobe house which is new and nice but has no A/C but with the low humidity it is OK. Kind of like a desert in the summer and a real winter with the elevation.
If you don't like to mow grass then NM is great. Most yards just have rocks and local shrubs. It's a big deal to have air conditioning in many parts, many houses have swamp coolers which actually work pretty well in that climate.
The downside is the state is pretty impoverished so many small towns are run down. If you get anywhere near a reservation there are lots of problems with crime and vagrants due to the daily mass migration to and from the rez for the local populous to get their booze and drugs. In towns like Gallup there is 24 hour armed security at many fast food places.

What about New Mexico? Is it the Mississippi of the West? No one seems to talk about it as the place to go.
All the typography of the state is pretty much the same, yellow brown desert.

You don't know what you are talking about.

High desert country in upper part of NM is beautiful. No humidity. Interesting landscapes, climate definitely unlike LA or FL. Visited Santa Fe, Ghost Ranch, Gallup, Albuquerque, and the Taos area. Their "New Mexican cuisine" is amazing-good. A lot of open land in between cities, a lot of small rural communities. Looks like very good quality of life is definitely possible. Also the converse. Both realities are very evident. A good place to consider living/moving if in your 20s or 30s.

Safer than old Mexico, abundance of meth, underrated as place to dump dead body, good place to find turquoise jewelry, solid skiing in the north.

High noon saloon. Oldest saloon in the west. Now a steakhouse. Had a 46oz bone in buffalo ribeye. Was awesome. Also stopped at the land of fire and ice. Pretty cool place. The Valcano plumes flooded hundreds of years ago and then froze. Still frozen to this day. Walk on the Valcano rim and it's 112 deg. Go down in the plumes and it's 30

I lived in NM for a while. It's actually a nice place in some areas. I lived in the northern part of the state and if you are in to outdoors it can be s great place...skiing ( water and snow), hiking, hunting, fishing...you name it.
If you are moving from Louisiana it can be culture shock, though.
I've been back several times and always have a great time.
Go for it !!!!

I want to go. Sounds great and much better than the flat, humid, swamps in LA.

Doesn't sound like it's a good place to make money, though.

There are a LOT of cockroaches in Albuquerque. It seemed like a decent place otherwise.
There are a lot of decent small towns in New Mexico as well.

If you're into photography you could argue NM is the best state. There are a lot of famous photographers in Santa Fe and cool galleries.
Reason is the architecture, old churches, and awesome colors on the natural landscape.
Taos/Santa Fe would be a great place to live if you're ok with a laid back lifestyle. ABQ is more big city, by NM standards anyway.

New Mexico is made up of a diverse mix of people. You have a mixture of Native Americans, Mexicans, real cowboys and outlaw types, military, Constitutional Law extremists, UFO chasers, dessert hippies (like real, Rainbow people), artsy people, big hunters, and outdoorsy people.
I couldn't live there unless it was in Santa Fe or Albuquerque. Some of these small, desolate towns attract some very far out, weird people that are out of touch with civilization and reality. Maybe it's too much time in the sun and sand...

While parts of New Mexico may be nice to look at, overall it is a desolate wasteland as barren as the surface of the moon.
If you want to get severely depressed and contemplate suicide, just take a drive across the state of New Mexico.
