I don't think the writer is discussing hypotheticals. He is calling LSU's season a waste because in early February there is a chance they may not make the NCAA tournament. Literally every goal an SEC basketball team would play for is still in front of LSU.

Well we have this. The networks want to put Simmons on. The committee will give LSU every benefit of the doubt to vote them in somewhere in the NCAAT. That's not so much what I'm worried about
