Idk I've watched a few LSU games this season because they are all on espn because of Simmons and honestly I just don't see what makes him so great. Not trying to bash kid but I dont see the hype in the games I've watched.
What makes him so great is that he is very good at a bunch of things but not extremely great at one thing. This is why people think he is not as good as he is. He is a stat sheet filler. They want him to score 30-40 or get 20-30 rebounds or 10-15 assist but that's just not who he is but he will give you a few of all those things. He is an all around player whose skill set is way better suited for the NBA over college.

The fact that he's top 5 in the SEC in:
Points
Rebounds (#1 by a wide margin)
Assists
FG %
Steals
He's having one of the best seasons in SEC history

Couldn't have said it better myself. Can you imagine him in the NBA with his back to the basket waiting for the clear double team. He will eat NBA defenses for lunch.

I'd almost rather us stagger our rotation again and bring Quarterman off the bench so his minutes run when Simmons comes out the game.
With the way Blakeney is shooting, I love the idea of having Hornsby, Blakeney, Patterson, and Victor on the court with him

I agree...to many guys that want the ball in their hands on the court at one time....plus when Simmons is out LSU needs TQ's create ability.
I compare TQ and especially JG to the velociraptors on the movie jurassic world. You need them to have any hope of killing the super T-rex but you can't control them so they may end up killing you instead.

Is he a great potential of a great player?
this is a fair question. No doubt Simmons has some exceptional skills, especially for a 6'10" guy. In transition with the ball in his hands, he's just phenomenal. We all see that.
But he has flaws in his game. I have to admit there are numerous times when he doesn't have much of an impact on the game, and I catch myself having to look for him on the court to see if he's even there.
Yes, his stat line is usually very good, but he's not the type of player who takes over a game and puts his team on his back. He just isn't.

I don't understand why so many here think it is Forde's job to promote LSU in a positive light.
Posted on 2/11/16 at 10:12 am to EZE Tiger Fan
It isn't. But at the same time, why should LSU fans be concerned about the rambling musings of a national writer who finds it "hard to appreciate" Simmons b/c he plays at LSU?
OK, I'll admit it, LSU and Coach Jones (I assume; maybe though he had nothing to do with the Sports Information Dept's trumpeting of Simmons) promoted Simmons as the Next Great Thing, when, what they should have done is just say he is a wonderful player with a unique skill set. The media loves to build up players and then tear them down, why help them?

That is actually an awesome analogy

LSU did exactly what they should have done with Simmons. They have one year with him and they promoted the heck out of him to get people to buy tickets and get the exposure for future recruits. Now Johnny needs to get this team in the tourney to fully capitalize on having Ben. If he does not then i agree it is time to move on because he will never get a top recruit to come here.

Good point (I assume you mean or).
What these goons at ESPN don't seem to realize is this team is a reflection of Simmons as a player. He is obviously very talented, but has clearly not put it all together. He has put up some impressive stats, but has not been the difference between a W/L in any games this year.
Simmons has been impressive, and has made this team better, but we have not seen him take the edge, and until he does, neither will the team as a whole.
They are certainly trying to create some rhetoric that he is being held back by his team, which has just not been the case. What irritates me is that these writers make such bold claims based on very little insight; you now they have only watched a couple games this season. They jump in and conclude that this season is somehow a disappointment because we lost a big game.
They publicize these conclusions that basically intend to bury lesser known programs, and they do the same in football.
Its hard to appreciate a great player on a bubble team? Give me a break, that is what college sports are all about. The only thing that keeps the interest in college sports year after year is that everyone has a shot in any given year and the landscape is constantly evolving. To condemn a team in early February is disingenuous.

Completely agree. But Lsu and in college you need the scorer more than the stat sheet filler. We have a better record with hield rather than Simmons. Simmons will be the bigger star and thrive in the NBA. It's two different games and two different relative talent levels. Simmons creating extra possessions with offensive rebounds and his passing ability sure helps. However I'd take Hield and his .500 3point percentage over Simmons for college. Be selfish be the man be the alpha dog.

If you replace Simmons with Buddy, LSU would be absolutely awful this year.
And that isn't a knock on Buddy either

This is the point I was trying make and you said it better. LSU their best players to NBA last year and the only reason the expectations for LSU basketball were high in preseason was Simmons but he has lived up to those expectations.

College is all about that guard play. Simmons barely played vs UK but because we had good Tim vs bad Tim we dominated them.
Hield is 50% on the season from three. We have no one close to his consistency.

And we would be absolutely crushed down low in every single game and have no length on the team.
Robinson would be a starter
We'd be horrible. He'd be an improvement over Hornsby, but not enough to overcome losing the SEC leading rebounder who near the top in assists, points, steals, etc

Agreed. I ignore ESPN outside of game coverage. When I watch games, my TV is muted. Don't care what sport it is.

LSU and JJ did what was right in order to promote him for the one year we have him. JJ is just an average coach (at this point in his career....I believe he will improve), which is why we will struggle to make the NCAAT.

Not so fast....Hield is a better college player.....and while I do agree we would miss simmons rebounding ability we would get an extraordinary basketball player in return who can win games nearly by himself (which at this point Ben cannot).
LSU could realistically win 8 or 9 games in conference without Ben or Buddy....and that's not absolutely awful is it?
What we do not know is how this team would respond to not having Ben or how the chemistry of the team would be affected. It would also create more opportunities for others like B. Sampson who would definitely be further along than he is now and is a complete mystery to me.
