Article just posted on ESPN

quote:

as Wednesday night’s 94-83 loss at South Carolina proved, even when Simmons is aggressive, it still doesn’t guarantee a win for the Tigers or victory for fans who want to enjoy the Ben Simmons Experiment, which will end once he declares for the NBA draft in the coming months.

It’s not working. Everyone involved deserves more and better.

Sipping fine wine at a dive bar doesn’t make sense. But that’s how this season feels with Simmons. We have this incomparable 6-foot-10 athlete but it’s so hard to appreciate his abilities when he’s playing for a bubble team in the SEC.

Sure, he finished 9-for-15 (21 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals) in a road win over Auburn. Then he excelled in a 7-for-11 outing (16 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks) in a victory over Mississippi State on Saturday.

And after a rough first half in Wednesday’s game -- a loss that squandered the Tigers’ chance to hold onto sole possession of first place in the SEC -- Simmons unveiled some of his unique gifts. He played point guard and helped the Tigers overcome a seven-point deficit in the second half and the tie the game with just under 11 minutes to play. He slashed. He made key defensive stops, and a few ill-advised choices on defense, too. He dunked. He maneuvered however and wherever he wanted despite South Carolina’s constant doubles.

After he picked off an inbounds pass and got fouled on the other end, Simmons slammed after the whistle and stared at the South Carolina crowd. In a dunk earlier that half, he cut through the lane and flexed after the flush.

He recorded 20 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks Wednesday night.

Still, another loss and now a three-way tie atop the SEC (Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina).

And it feels like a waste at this point.

More in the link.

It will be such a bummer if LSU doesn't make the tournament...

truth fricking hurts

but it's also glaringly a clickbait and a over dramatized article from ESPN.

Another reporter trying to make the news instead of reporting the news.

LSU is in great position to win the SEC and the season is a waste. OK.

I understand your point, but there is a significant chance that LSU misses the NCAAT altogether, and that would certainly be a waste, no?

As well as he played tonight, he needs to hit his free throws. He left too many on the board for us.

And outside of tonight against a team that is undefeated at home, this team has played pretty damn well at full strength.

Yes, it would be a waste. LSU has been playing good basketball overall though.

Agreed. He also rarely gets the benefit of the doubt when he's under the basket or he'd be going to the line much more.

Even tonight was a solid performance from the team as a whole, but TQ just proved to be too much to overcome unfortunately.

ETA: I don't necessarily agree with the premise of the article, but I figured I'd share it regardless.

I don't think the writer is discussing hypotheticals. He is calling LSU's season a waste because in early February there is a chance they may not make the NCAA tournament. Literally every goal an SEC basketball team would play for is still in front of LSU.

Agreed.

Our style of play will not mesh well with that officiating crew, and it was also worsened by the South Carolina style of play. I read that it was the same crew that did the UGA game. Not a good combo for a team that likes to run.

Also in great position to miss the tournament. Goes both ways.

Can we change the title, please? Makes it seems like you're quoting Simmons.

Thought the same when I saw the article on ESPN. Reused that title here but it can be misleading.

Is he a great potential or a great player? He is a part of what makes them a bubble team.

Of course Simmons helps make LSU a bubble team. They'd be straight awful without him.

Surely you aren't implying that Simmons is a liability to the team.

It is pretty damn obvious that he's a great player.

He's just top 5 in the SEC in the following categories:

1.) Points - 19.4/game
2.) Assists - 5/game
3.) Field Goal % - 56.7%
4.) Rebounds - 12.3/game (#1, by almost 3/game)
5.) Steals - 1.9/game

Stats don't mean anything if he is not carrying his team to victories. He may have all the potential to be a great player for NBA but he is no Lebron James of college basketball (not at least so far). BTW I like the kid.

So you were actually saying that Ben isn't great

Last I checked LSU is first in the SEC

And it is a team game. He can't make the wide open shots for the other players. He can't pass for TQ.

By your same logic, Anthony Davis isn't a great NBA player, despite being an absolutely incredible basketball player

That makes no logical sense... His issues, mainly being a more assertive on offense, are absolutely similar to Lebron James when he came into the NBA. What does "Lebron James of college basketball" even mean?

He is just a timid player and that doesn't allow for his talent to show on the floor. He is no Lebron James who can shoot the ball from anywhere, drive to the basket with authority any time he wants, and carry his team on his shoulder and bring them back from 20 points deficit with 5 minutes left.
