So how much would a hurricane help the oil market ? I know there is a trade off but the thought of a storm hitting the gulf could spark a rebound of sorts .

Probably just temporary relief if one does it. It will return back to lower levels after

It would hurt more than it would help.

You might get a short term pop. But we have so much oil sloshing around right now, that even if there was a major cut in production, it would not have a huge long term effect.
If there was major, significant damage to production, the president would just tap the SPR, like he did after Katrina.
High oil prices are not in the economic best interest of the country as a whole.

Nope, low oil prices are better for 90% of the country. Just like low corn prices are better for 99% of the country.

OPEC deciding to cut production, long term lack of capex causing supply shortages, or Saudi and Iran lobbing missiles at each other seem like the only way for prices to come back up significantly.
Simple Supply and Demand.

On oil. Corn really doesn't have as much of an impact on the price of beef and groceries as some think it does. But low oil prices are a function of one quarters overproduction (largely, Q1 I believe) and lower demand. Lower demand. Not good. Actually lower increase in demand. Demand has increased marginally.

My grandparents are already convinced that the government controls the weather....this would push them over the edge
