Top 3 in KBB resale value in a lot of segments.
Ford Focus ST is the 2nd best sporty compact in terms of holding value.

Car & Driver
I had an SVT Focus a few years ago as a commuter car because I thought it would be fun to drive.
That was the biggest piece of shite vehicle I've ever driven.

And the Subaru is number 1 in that same KBB segment. But yet you when someone suggested it.
The Subaru is a better car with better resale and it's not even close.

Something tells me the vast majority of RS buyers dgaf about resale value.
I assume this guy wants an RS because it is a quick car that's more practical than a sports car.
An RS shits on the WRX in the performance department. If that's what you care about, then no, the Subaru is definitely not the better car at all.

The Subaru isn't a better car in any category whatsoever and I actually generally like them.
You can't tell him what the resale value will be on a car that's never existed before, much less in the states.
It'll probably kill your Subaru's resale value which hasn't had a real competitor in 10 years.

Everyone has their preference. But for 40k there are quite a few cars I'd go with before th Focus. Just not my type of car

I live in Bozeman, Montana. The climate resembles a Russian winter for half the year. If I'm buying a sports car for $35-40k it's either this, an STi, a Golf R or a post-lease Audi S3.
Out of those, this Ford is far and away at the top of my list.

Get it.
I test drove one. Between the power and the handling, it's a fun car.

For about that same price you could buy a brand new automatic 1SS Camaro that actually has a real engine, 6.2 liter V8 pushing 455hp and 455ft/lb torque, 0-60 in 4.0, runs the 1/4 mile at 12.0, and with active fuel management that comes on the automatic (shuts down 4 cylinders at highway speeds) you can still get from 25-28 mpg combined city/highway.

I think the adjective works here. One of the options on the CLA is an illuminated Mercedes star in the grill. This option is only available on two cars: the CLA, their cheapest sedan and the GLA, their cheapest SUV. I would love to drive any Mercedes Benz except for those two. Even the new C class is crazy nice. But the CLA is a fwd crap box that hardly competes with a Hyundai Sonata for features.

Would rent.. if it's still the cheapest car available

I think its badass... And all wheel drive hothatch with 345hp ..yep I'd drive it.

The posts from non-car enthusiasts will be easy to spot. The focus RS is a true petrolhead machine. The only issue I have with it is the interior looks a little dated to me. Exterior is aggressive without being overdone, then who can argue with 345 hp and AWD...0-60 in under 5 sec and nearly a sub-13 second 1/4 mile. Plenty fast.
Between the options you listed, this would be my pick.

I would only drive it if it had 1,000 hp. Hopefully, that would make it fast enough where no one would see me driving it.
