Why does GA Tech not recruit better?

I guess I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but I can't figure out why the nerds don't recruit better than they do.
1) Located in an urban area in one of the most talent rich states.
2) Decent, if not spectacular tradition.
3) P5 conference where programs like Clemson, FSU, VT and NC do just fine.
They really should recruit a lot better than they do, but instead they seem to compete against mid majors for 2 and 3 stars.
I guess it could be academics, but I know they have jock tracks to make sure they keep folks eligible. Calculus is not really calculus if you are being spoon fed by a tutor every day.
Also before you say it is triple option scaring elite recruits away, they weren't recruiting any better when they were running a pro style.
Like I said, I should be happy that the dawgs whip their arse on the field and in state recruiting every year, but I can't help but worry that they will figure it out one day.

Most underachieving athletic department in the country.

I don't think many people want to get ready in the same locker room Reggie Ball got dressed for games. It's bad juju.

Currently part of it could be running the triple option. At least for offensive players.

Do they get good fan support? That could be a reason.

i'd imagine 90% of P5 CFB players don't take calc
everybody at GT has to take calc, and it doesn't get easier after that. there isn't a "blow off" curriculum there

sure it is.
what you really mean is: such people are not being tested as to their gumption and willingness to buckle down and by golly, you did the work (and you resent that they are given help). Do you disapprove of using computers too?
Ga Tech won a national championship in the not too distant past.
It all depends on the coach.

The female scenery compared to a school like UGA

Most good football players don't like calculus

Well, they won their conference in 2009, and played in their championship game last year. I'd say they are having more success than UGA.

The school doesn't commit enough to athletics. They're happy with being usually above average and occasionally beating UGA with Paul Johnson. His triple option isn't going to attract many big time athletes, and Paul Johnson doesn't seem to care too much for recruiting anyway.

GT just isn't a powerhouse football program. The best we can really hope for is a really good season 1/2 of every 5 years. We are just never going to consistently compete with the big schools bc we aren't one. Sure we can have really good seasons here and there and most GT fans are pretty ok with that. Now 4-8 or whatever is terrible and heads will roll again if that happens.
Now basketball is a different story and it is 100% the coach. If nothing else, Hewitt proved that the right coach can attract top level talent year after year at GT. We just have a dud at coach right now that can't attract the ATL HS basketball players. Hewitt had metro ATL on lock.
