Number of alarms does not equal number of fire stations called out

It is more specific and means with each new alarm X number of units and certain trucks are called out.
Now you, too, can pompously correct 99% of others.

One alarm-- Three pumpers, two personnel units.
Two alarms -- Three more pumpers, two more personnel units. At this point a hazmat unit and supply shop often are added.
Three alarms -- Two more pumpers and one more personnel unit.
For each additional alarm, one more pumper and another unit of the incident commander's choice is added.

So there were 6 firehouses at the fire on canal today? Cool.

Did you stay at a Holiday Inn last night?

How many units does a typical fire station have?
Posted on 1/27/16 at 9:40 pm to HurricaneDunc
I assume about 2-3 pumpers and a personnel unit
Posted on 1/27/16 at 9:41 pm to HurricaneDunc
I don't even think one average station has three pumpers. I see a lot with just two and just one personnel unit

I can't lie, when I saw that earlier, I was definitely wondering WTF it meant. Thanks.

Do a six alarm fire has 11 pumpers and roughly 7+ units. So probably about six fire houses?

Fires arent that big of a deal, don't need that many people to put them out, should just let em burn

Yes I think in that case it is roughly equal to the number of houses. But it doesn't always work out that way. I always thought that it was simply each alarm equals one full firehouse.
But then again it could be less than six houses if some had three pumpers

No I did not stay at a Holiday Inn express last night. But I did help put out a fire at one.

I'm going to challenge the next random firefighter I see to a battle of wits.
Stay tuned.....

I think the average Rant thread has three pumpers.
I prefer a tugger in lieu of a pumper.

Well heck, this came up at dinner tonight when a Friend's kid asked her what it meant. I wish I had known this so I could look awesome.

Not every house has multiple pumpers. Most only house one pumper and a medic unit or sprint truck and maybe a rescue truck. It all depends on the department size and what their particular district calls for. Each department is different.
