Tips for enjoying action movies?

I want to be able to enjoy action movies. I really do, but I've gotten to the point where I hate just about any move that has a significant amount of shooting/guns/explosions/violence.
I hated Sicario
I hated Mad Max
They bored me. And yet I see so many good reviews from people. And Im just like, W.T.F. how do I get to enjoying them? I never watch superhero movies anymore. Its the same ridiculous film over and over.
I cant stand the whole unlimited guns/unlimited ammo concept all these movies have. I also cant stand the unlimited health concept they have as well, especially for superhero movies. People make fun of fast and furious franchise, but to me, they are on the same level as all these other films, they are all ridiculous.
Maybe its because I have always been a reader. I always loved reading books. I didnt need to have crazy chaotic scenes painted out for me. I enjoyed adventure/mystery/drama/thriller/horror, etc. I want to be able to understand a character, feel their feels. I want to be able to forget Im watching a movie and feel like Im an observer of a real world. I like a deep plot, dialogue, relationships between characters. Subtle glances, words with deeper meanings, body language that speaks volumes!
But as soon as I start getting into a plot of an action movie BOOOM, POW POW POW, gunshots, explosions, dozens of enemies dying while the hero remains unscathed with limitless ability to avoid death. The camera changes back and both quickly, short, quick shots. You cant even really tell whats going on, you just know that the hero was in trouble, and then he was ok. OH shite but now hes in trouble, oh my god want an incredible shot and now hes ok. I feel like I miss half the movie with the speed of the scenes.
And you know, that would all be ok, it really would, if CGI and editing didnt make it damn near impossible for anything to not be edited in. So you cant even really appreciate that as much anymore.
Look, I know Ive been ranting a lot, and action fans, dont take it personally. This is just me explaining where Im coming from in the hopes that YOU can diagnose me. Give me the medicine i need, the secret formula, to be able to finally enjoy action films. Suspend reality? I swear, i swear I try. But all I can think to myself is "wtf this is too much, this is too overwhleming, way too many things going on here, WTF WHY ARENT THEY SHOOTING HIM RIGHT NOW, HES A SITTING DUCK, OMG THIS IS SO STUPID". I swear i try to forget logic and reason, but damn it is hard. TEACH ME, how can i do it??
After watching an action movie, i just always think "wow that was a waste of my time". I dont want it to be like that. I want to enjoy it. I know mad max was good, i really do, because it was really good for an action film. But I still disliked it

Sicario is much more of a suspense thriller than "action" movie. It's not Con Air or some dumb arse Michael Bay movie. If you think it is just some bang bang shoot em up action movie you must not have been paying attention.

im very critical of action movies, but mad max, the raid, and the raid 2 are some of the best i've seen.
the tropes that you don't like are just the nature of the genre. i come from a more literary background as well, and I basically came to terms with the genre and trained myself to enjoy movies that were well-done. it's all you can really ask for.

Perks of Being a Wallflower: the chances of a kid who was molested by his aunt becoming friends with a group of older kids in high school, one of whom is gay, and ultimately working out his emotions is almost absurd. But you go along with it because you want to.
Inside Out: lots of suspension of reality here. Emotions are personified and there's a fricking memory bank in your head represented by, basically, marbles. But you don't care, because you want to find out how Joy can solve the problems of moving.
John Wick: a super-assassin who found love and quit the profession is drawn back in when his wife dies and her memory is killed by his former boss' son. He runs out of bullets and gets hurt and the action scenes are tight, but you have to suspend your disbelief. He's the hero. He'll either survive or find redemption, but the stakes have to be high enough and the barriers to his success have to be big enough to make the audience invest. This is where you appear to begin to find it hard to suspend disbelief. But why? Who gives a damn if it couldn't happen in reality? Can it happen in the context of the story? That's all that matters.
So you need to do two things with every movie, and every story, particularly since you claim to know about literature: suspend your disbelief as to the world and understand that, unless you're reading a tragedy, the hero will succeed, no matter the obstacles. That's very nearly every story arc ever made because the audience doesn't put up with nothing being resolved. Even tragedies resolve the plot, even if it takes the death of the entire cast to do it.
Action movies are no different than SciFi, horror, fantasy, romance, comedies... You name it. The only movies you don't have to suspend disbelief for are documentaries.
You should know this and because you should, this thread comes off as you trying to be self-important and haughty, as if you are above the basic entertainment of the masses (i.e. action films).

My suggestion to you is, don't watch anymore action movies.
The older I get, the less patience I have for goofy fighting, endless car chases, and shootouts. Just sick of them. So I avoid those type movies. It's easy to do.

Your tastes are changing. Happens all the time.
I hate them for the most part nowadays because most have the same plot and structure and consequences. Most have no risks. But occasionally moves like Mad Max make me care again and give me hope in the genre. But most that come out aren't that great as a whole.

Sicario should not be in this discussion of "action movies". Not even close really. It was fantastic and I really don't understand how those scenes you mentioned ruined it for you. Those scenes don't even stand out to me when I think about the movie as a whole except for the ending with del toro part. And that didn't seem unrealistic to me
However, I'm generally on the same page as you with not liking the over the top action/popcorn flicks. Just not my type of movie really. They tend to all be very similar in plot and outcome/ending

I feel your pain when I watch a action movie with a female action character. Hollywood will take a 110 pound beautiful woman with no scare or scab on her body yet she can beat the hell out of 15 250 pound badass rough and ruthless men. It dosent make much sense but let me try to explain this the best way I can.
It's a fricking movie it's not real. Take it for what it is, have fun try to let things that would bother you in real life disappear. Use your imagination.

But I'm an action junkie.
My tip is don't be such a pretentious arse.
I don't like ultra serious dramas. I can appreciate them for script and direction and beauty, but I have a bunch of stress in my life. The last thing I want to do when I finally have a chance to unwind is watch some ultra realistic drama about how much life sucks.
I'd rather escape from reality for a little bit and just be entertained.
And this what action movies are at their core. They range but they're just mindless fun entertainment like Olympus has fallen to rooting for the underdog hero suspense like Die Hard.
Action movies can be a variety of things depending on the script and the acting.
But I watch movies to get away from reality.
I don't want to see a movie where everytime someone is shot they're out of action. Or every fist fight is a couple of punches or alot of grappling.
Real life is boring. Mad Max is chaotic fueled insanity at its best.

I'll suggest Predator and 13 Assassins. Predator may seem like a dumb action movie on the surface but there's a good bit of emotion involved. Once the group realizes they're being hunted by something stronger than them, you see fear and paranoia start to set it. The final Arnold vs Predator sequence has almost no dialogue or guns. Its a more cerebral movie than people give it credit for.
13 Assassins is a slow build but you get to know the characters and their motivations. The final action scene is wild but you get to see the planning that this small force did to fight a larger force. It helps if you know a little about this period of Japanese history too.

Sicario wasn't an action movie and if you hated it then I have no answer for that. There's another thread in which people complain about Sicario not having enough action, which I think is absurd.
I agree with you on Mad Max, just incredibly tedious after a while and a waste of Hardy and Johannson's talent. It's purely a matter of personal preference and taste and I don't ever have any expectation of enjoying a movie like that. Or a pure musical.
