Can Wink, SmartThings, etc be true alternatives to ADT?

For home security?
Can the hub sound an alarm when a sensor is tripped?

Just throw together a SimpliSafe system and opt out of monitoring if you are just looking for some sensors that can trip an alarm.

You would still need a communicator to send signals to the central station. ADT actually just came out with Canopy which allows third party devices like Wink to incorporate ADT response services.

Just be aware that if you are using wireless, the signals can be easily jammed. Unlikely to occur but I imagine you will see an increase use in those in the future as wireless becomes more prevalent and effective.

No, the reliability is not there for me to trust it for home security.

If somebody is dedicated enough to jam your home network then they'll get past a traditional home security system too.
Piper is a system I've looked into extensively and something I'll get in the future.

After watching a video of a guy breaking into a house using a box cutter and coming through a hole he made in the vinyl siding in under a minute I kind of gave up feeling secure about door locks.

Not entirely on topic, but why would anyone go with ADT? You can get better equipment and local monitoring for less money, while simultaneously helping a local business. I pay less than half of what the typical ADT customer pays for much better service.

Ala carte monitoring. I like it.

Wink users will find the solution integrated directly within the Wink app and can subscribe on a month-to-month basis, with no-term contracts and service options. From there, you can easily access ADT Canopy to manage your home security or connect to live help.
ADT Canopy also has your back when you’re away. Say you’re on vacation somewhere remote, you can subscribe to ADT Canopy for the month you're away and stay completely covered. If your Wink-compatible door and window sensors or smoke/CO alarms detect abnormal activity, ADT Canopy will immediately spring into action.

What's your goal? Are you wanting a security system with or without monitoring? Do you already have a hub and only want to pay for the sensors?
ADT is a monitoring company that has inflated prices to cover the "free" equipment. They are not a security company. You can get add-on equipment for Honeywell and DSC hardware that allows you to access your security system through the internet and receive email and txt alerts. You can also self-monitor security systems by having the system call your phone instead of a monitoring company.

Motion detectors. Problem solved.
