I know growing up if I got an arse spanking for doing something wrong I sure as hell didn't get caught the next time.
Just the idea of a belt on my butt stopped me from doing some really stupid stuff growing up.

All depends on the kid. At this stage with my son, a time out seems to really be effective. He's very upset by it.
But there comes a point when they are going to step up and say "WTF is he going to do if I just leave time out and do what I want". That point is called arse whoopin time. I know I did it as a kid. I can totally see spanking without anger or agression. I can see it the other way too and that would be wrong. But I was spanked and don't hold it against my parents. I turned out pretty well and am not poor, so there's that.

One day you'll grow up (hopefully) and look back at this thread and laugh at just how ignorant you were.

Have you ever been around a 4yr old? They are barbarians, primal to the core. As parents, you have to teach them to be "civilized" and thoughtful. Until they are molded, a quick pop goes a long way.

Doing it out of anger isn't good. But if they know that pain comes as a consequence to disobedience, then you must sit them down, explain to them that every action has a consequence, and deliver said consequence. You don't love them any less, and the pain is fleeting and impermanent. But it is necessary for conditioning.
This is how good parenting is done. One of the main things a parent has to teach their kids is about the consequences of their actions both good and bad. There is a time and place for corporal punishment and not all situations call for it. If you do it right, spankings should be rare and never done in anger.

As a youth coach, you can literally point out the "no spanks". The way some kids talk to their parents; sheesh.

know a lot of people were spanked when they were younger, but have we finally realized the absolute stone-age barbarism in that?
When you and your man-wife import your first child and it is running around a restaurant like a wild injun screaming at the top of its lungs while you sit and make useless threats, I'll whip it for you.

It really is disturbing how some kids behave towards their parents these days. Of course, the parents let them get away with that behavior. The outright disrespect that a lot of kids have these days may be attributed to the lack of spankings. Now, I will say that respect is earned but I'd imagine that these parents with disrespectful kids aren't really doing anything to earn that respect.
I saw this over Christmas: a girl cussed out what I presumed was her dad one minute only to ask him to buy her something the next minute with zero remorse.

In most cases if you're spanking your child too often or not ever, you're probably doing something wrong.

Considering that there are a number of behaviors that will make you catch an arse whipping when you are older, it may not be such a bad idea to begin that lesson earlier in life.

wrong
I've never spanked my children and they all speak to adults and other children with respect.
I see the opposite. Whether in wal-mart or the football field, those kids whose parents are constantly whacking them are the worst. Parents who treat their children with respect and dignity treat others the same (in most cases).

You all can give all the anecdotal evidence that you want. But the research is pretty clear. Research consistently shows that mild corporal punishment past the age of three or so, while reinforcing to the parents because it works in the very short term, leads to increases in aggressive behavior and other problems. Please feel free to downvote the facts.

It sounds like you give out soccer participation trophies.
Your job as a parent is to keep your child alive and in one piece until they are 18.
I learned a long time ago that learning experiences as an adult are usually painful. And expensive.
Learning a lot of things while you are young cuts down on the number of things you need to learn as an adult.

I've only spanked mine a few times. I hate spanking them, but it's necessary for things like wanting to run out in the road or playing with the electrical socket and wanting to stick things in it. I spanked after telling him them don't do it several times, but they did it anyway.
