Do you let your kids point toy guns at other kids/dogs/etc.?

I got into a discussion earlier and when I said this is the way my father raised me and how I raise my kids, the person was dumbfounded. They asked why couldn't I let "kids be kids".
I told them my first "toy" gun was a bb gun when I was about 5. Day 1 my dad sat me down and went over the rules.
Am I off base here? My dad would whip my arse for pointing even a fake gun at a friend, dog or horse when I was little.

I can see your point but airsoft, paintball, and water guns were my childhood

I mean, we used to have BB gun wars and stuff, but other than that, I have always felt extremely uncomfortable pointing a gun at someone. If my parents saw that happen, no more pew pew

Not to mention, Cowboys and Native Americans.

When I was a kid, we played cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians. None of us got shot or grew up to be dangerous members of society or terrorists. My own grandsons play with nerf guns with the other kids. Yeah, I let em shoot at each other with nerf guns outside in the yard and they know the difference between real guns and nerf guns. They also know they can't take any kind of toy gun or resemblance to school. Too many parents in this country have become yankeefied and don't have any common sense. I don't think you are off base.

No kids yet, but i absolutely would not let me imaginary kids point their BB gun at a person or dog.
If it didnt actually shoot objects, i probably wouldnt care much either way.
Nerf toys are meant to shoot at people.

In his defense, he told me what would happen. He caught me a few times...
But seriously, I remember it like yesterday...
Dad: Son.
Me: Yeah, dad?
Dad: This is a bb gun. It's a real gun. If I ever catch you pointing it at something you don't intend to shoot or catch you with it off safety when not shooting... I'll whip your arse and put it up for 6 months.
Me: Yes sir.
First time happened within a week.
When I finally got it back, the lesson stuck with me.

We've had nerf gunfights at my house every night since Christmas.

A BB gun is not a toy gun. Nerf gun and water guns are. Teach them the difference. Best lesson is to show them what a real gun does compared to a toy.

Same here. Bad habits are hard to break. We did have some serious BB gun wars growing up. My Dad would have whooped my arse every time he saw me for a week straight. If he only knew the dumb shite we did growning up.

Hell no. That's all we had after my dad and all his "common sense gun control".

We had BB gun wars for about two weeks in high school. We weren't overly bright. Red Riders or Crossmans pumped once. Below the knees only. Until my buddy sent one thru the ear hole of my other buddy. A few hours of surgery, escaped death by .0079 centimeters, yada yada. Good times

Nerf guns are one thing
BB guns are guns in my house. Treat them just like you would any other gun.

I was this way with the first one. Guns are everywhere in my family. Pistols in glove boxes in trucks and on buggies. Long guns leaned up in corners behind doors. Before he was old enough to know on his own a real gun vs fake gun he just knew you don't point any gun at something else alive
By the second kid, the oldest was running around with so many nerf guns and airsofts it was a little easier to get him to understand toy gun vs adult guns
