Buying Vinyl Records - What Do You Know?

This, I am hoping will help those that may want to buy or sell Vinyl Records in some way. A thread to ask questions, share knowledge/stories, find items, etc. From what I can tell, collecting Vinyl has become quite popular. I searched this Board for such a thread and if I missed, forgive me and link me up.....I have questions.

My story, if you care....
As a result of recently taking out of storage and setting up my old 1976 Sansui Stereo system and old albums, I am new in searching for, looking at and purchasing old vinyl record albums. I am no novice at understanding what makes albums more valuable than others. I have recently discovered ebay auctions and I may becoming addicted. I started buying albums back in the mid 70's, but like most other people, started buying CDs in the late 80's. I have about 1000 vinyl(mostly Rock) at present and am looking to expand my library.

I'm not worried about how valuable an album is. Buy what you like.

Obscure over looked albums grab my attention, mainly because I already own most of what I look at. Filling in holes in artists library.....

It's too bad there isn't some kind of vinyl swap meet or something where people could bring their stuff and do some selling, buying or trading. I still buy from time to time but I have tons of old records I wouldn't mind selling off. It would be great if there was a venue for collectors to just bring their stuff in, let people look at it and do some dealing.
I know we don't have that in Baton Rouge but I wonder if they do that sort of thing in other cities?

Great idea, there may even be some kinda group or club that does this. I just recently started looking around at online venues. Very cool to see how popular this old stuff has become with the next generation. Finding actual vintage albums in good condition is an effort.....and some luck.....fun stuff all over again!!

Shark, I am trying to absorb and complete the novel that is your thread. Man that is some good stuff in there and thanks for getting that kinda talk started.
I have already pegged some of the posters as very knowledgeable "Stereo" guys. Also some younger guys who know there stuff about the new music, recordings, extras, etc.
Which posters do you consider "Collectors"? Who would know specific things that make records more valuable than another?
For instance: "How can you tell if an album is a 1st Pressing?"

This is the very reason I have not repurchased a turntable. I wouldn't be able to control my purchases and would spend way too much money.

New Orleans has the "Record Raid" and has swaps twice a year where you can buy or sell with other dealers. Lafayette also has the "Acadiana Vinyl Haul" and has had swap meets usually in the spring and fall. Both groups have facebook pages if you want to look into that.

It will vary for pretty much every record. You can use actual books like the Goldmine guides to help you narrow it down, but websites like Discogs.com and popsike.com will give you more specific clues and information. You can also see a decent market approximation of the record.

Why not just buy new? I'm sure there are some things that are rare and you have to find old copies of, but I bet you will be surprised at how easy it is to obtain new vinyl for current and old artists. Just look on Amazon, ebay, or do a google search. Baton Rouge doesn't have a great Vinyl scene, but it seems to be growing. Atomic Pop Shop has some good stuff, but it's incredibly overpriced, and you could order the same stuff for much less.

Marco Esquandolas knows his stuff real well and is quite the collector. I don't have any collector's albums myself, but would like to one day. I need to update my OP in that thread. I have added a lot of records since then. I still don't have a ton, maybe 200 or so.
