Is Fayetteville, AR a good place to live?

For those of you that have lived in NWA, how does it compare with other places you've lived? I'm in my early 40's, married with 4 kids under 10. IT consultant but I'm thinking about starting a business with some of the money I've saved (not necessarily IT related) so I'm always checking new places out as potential move destinations.
I don't care about the Razorbacks or Walmart. Would that be a problem?

Fayetteville is an awesome town. It's kinda like Asheville lite.
It is nothing like the rest of Arky.

it's a beautiful part of the country. not sure what the IT market looks like up in that area though.

There would be some good IT opportunity there. I believe HP even has a major call center there.

Northwest Arkansas is constantly rated as one of the best places to live in America. Very low unemployment, low crime, great schools.
You may not care about Walmart, but Walmart cares about NWA and continues to build up the NWA cities (specifically Bentonville and Rogers) to have more big-city type amenities.
Not to mention all of the jobs Walmart or Walmart related means. You could consult to some of the thousands of vendor offices that are up here.

R-Kansas is never a good place to live.

Lived in Bella Vista for around 18 months. That corner from Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers-Bentonville-Bella Vista is one of my favorite areas I have ever been. Great outdoors, the aesthetics of the area is immaculate with their building and sign codes. There are tons of transplants up there due to many companies moving their regional and national offices up that way to be closer to WM and Sams Club HQ so not being an Arky fan won't be a dealbreaker.

Fayetteville and the surrounding area of Rodgers, Bentonville, and Springdale is very nice. There's 500,000 people in the metro area of NWA so you can find plenty of groups and activities for anything that fits your taste. If you enjoy the outdoors there aren't many places more adventurous than the Ozarks.

The drive between Ft Smith and Fayetteville is beautiful too.

I never really knew Fayetteville was a nice area. It's very low-key.
How are the winters? Are any of the rivers or lakes swimable in the summer?
Russellville intrigues me as well. Doesn't look as nice but it has potential with Tech being there. It's a lower elevation and a little warmer yet still close to the mountainous terrain.

I see having so many eggs in one basket as a risk. What happens when WM stops requiring vendors to be located there? What if Amazon and jet destroy WM? Getting and then losing jobs is sometimes worse than never having those jobs in the first place.

Very nice part of the country. I would live in Rogers instead of Fayetteville.

And if you do move to NWA, here is a brief view of each of the 4 big towns:
Bentonville- Walmart and Walmart associates. Also, Walmart money/donations/activities. Lots of family events on the square. Waltons are pumping a lot of money into Bentonville to attract top notch talent from bigger cities. Best school$.
Rogers - my favorite. Southern neighbor of Bentonville. Less Walmart associates, but still many. Has access to Beaver Lake if you like lake activities. Has a lot of the non-meal entertainment and stores in NWA (outdoor mall, bowling, Home Depot, skate park, hiking, etc)
Springdale - don't move here unless you get a good deal. They are behind the times and trying to update their city. Home of Tuson headquarters.
Fayetteville - funky. College town, so more college students running around. Lots of outdoors activity, but less major business. More of an entrepreneur city. Major thing going for it is the UofA and its schools. Great school systems as well.
Basically all have something good to offer except Springdale.

quote:i doubt the vendors would ever stop being located in Bentonville. It is invaluable to walk down the street to get Walmart to put their new product out. Walmart won't be destroyed by Amazon. Compete, yes, destroyed; no. They have different strategies. Long story short, Walmart isn't going anywhere; neither is Amazon. So that shouldn't really be a factor. And Jet is a non-factor.

Like I said though, there are many other entrepreneurs/businesses up here. Tyson (meat industry); JB Hunt (transportation industry) plus all the mom and pop stores...opportunity abound here.

NWA is literally one of the best places in the country to live

I moved to NW Arky from BR in 2008. You will have to force me to leave.
It's wonderful here. So many amenities, great outdoor activities, a world class museum, good schools, low crime - I can go on and on.
Oh - housing is cheap as well.
IMO, there are few areas I'd rather raise a family.
