Yes. He was protecting himself and knew a lot more than we do about the situation

So, you think it's ok for a coordinator to receive payment for not coaching?

If you're a professional and your career is about to be derailed by a fringe lunatic head coach, yea I'd want to leave as well.

Can't fault him although he is still a tPOS for the way he handled it IMO.

Chavis still lied to Miles and showed zero loyalty. Plus, he still took the job while under contract with LSU. Finally, he still decided to sue LSU.

All this. Chavis went out like a b

Yes, our fans like to blame Chavis but he saw the writing on the wall and got out before the ship sank. Miles wanted to keep Chavis........Alleva knew getting rid of Chavis now while there were young QBs on the roster it would lead to Mile's demise. Alleva set Miles up for failure and has run our University into the ground doing so.

Seems clear in retrospect that Alleva at least had the possibility of firing Les in his mind.

Actually, I think it was clear from the get go that Alleva was hedging his bets. Whether that was an indication a coaching change was on the drawing board is another issue.

My recollection is that there were a few instances of programs being on the hook for assistant coaches when a head coach retired/moved on/was fired just prior to Joe trying to slip that clause into everyone's contracts. Seems I recal some talking head commenting on this probably being the new normal, more aimed at head coaches leaving for the NFL/higher prestige jobs than at firings.

But my memory is sometimes faulty.

I couldn't agree more! They rat-fricked Miles by effectively pushing Chavis out so were were stuck with Alabama's leftover garbage.

So, does this change your view of Chavis leaving? Or do you still think it was wrong of him to talk to/accept the A&M job before the bowl game?

This is not new news at least not to me. He left because of the Miles clause. I don't blame him for leaving. He wanted stability and i think it was best for him and LSU that he move on. This clause plus not being allowed to hire their own assistants is why Steele is the coordinator.

I'd say I completely understand where he was coming from in moving on, but I also agree that he showed very little class in how he handled it. Finalizing his deal on the day of the game, not visiting with his players, showing up in College Station the next day, he sucks.
Why would you show any respect to a program which was trying to sneak an "out" clause into your contract? After he had the track record he did for the defense while the offense was, well, you know...

No.

I just don't blame him for wanting to get out.

You are looking for things not there. Chavis was Miles' DC. A new HC would want his own DC. Hence, the language.

Not if you believe the stories of LSU offering him $1.9 mil to stay with that performance and recruiting record of late. Screw him

That language is in all the assistants' contracts, and it was my impression that it's always been in all of them. It seems like a pretty standard provision, regardless of your plans for the head coach. You never know when or why a head coach will no longer be there, so you don't want to be on the hook for a bunch of long-term payouts to assistants when you are going to need a new head coach who will doubtless want full control over who he hires as assistants.

So, no, I don't think it was any indication of anything.
