What's your budget? Roommates? How small can you go? Studio?

The skinny on apartment hunting is that there are three flavors

1)OT Baller. Buy a condo- depending on where you look this can run you from $400k+ for a decent a 1 BR in Manhattan. It won't be big, and there will be some sort of co-op or maintainence fee+ NYS property taxes. That's in addition to your NYC personal income tax, which will be a lot.

2)Apartments with broker. Be prepared to pay a lot of money for this. You find an apt you like, only to find out that a broker is selling the lease for the bldg owner. The fee? Depends, but at a minimum it's 1 month rent, sometimes more I have seen it from 8.5-17% of the annual lease. So for a $2500/month 1 BR, that's up to a $5100 nonrefundable fee. That's on top of the typical two months security and first months rent. It's not uncommon to pay $10k + just to get your keys. The other option is to hire a broker to look for you, but your selection may be limited depending on the broker.

3)OT poor. Craigslist, no fee apartments usually rented out directly by the building owner. This is where you find either the diamond or the rough, and where the scandals happen. Basically go on craigslist and look up apartments by neighborhood. Contact building owner, and do a lot of back checking.

Washington Square hotel in the Village. Good location, cool neighborhood, quaint hotel. It is the hotel in "diamonds and rust", Joni Mitchell's version.

It's awesome. And a much better "anniversary" vibe than the other steakhouses mentioned.

I love Keen's but it is a place I have a business dinner at not some place I take my wife.

We're paying about $2k in Houston for a 1,000 sq feet. Budget is prob $500k if we decide to buy or $2700 for rent

$2700/mo in Manhattan won't go very far, studio/1br.

He's right. Paid $2500 for a 400 sq. foot 6 floor walk up in Nolita. Great neighborhood but the walk up killed us.

I stayed at the Excelsior last night on the upper west side. Reasonably priced. Right next to the natural history museum. Tons of restaurants and bars nearby. In a much quieter part of town but easy to get everywhere. Also check out the highline hotel. The big name brands get very expensive right now.

Crowne Plaza Times Square is lovely but expensive. Doubletree Times Square was mentioned and is nice but also expensive.
Hampton Inn Times Square North on 8th avenue very nice too.

A taxi ride from financial district will take you FOREVER and be $$$$$$. (I've done it twice and won't do it again.) Subway is relatively quick and at busy times of day not to scary LOL. But hotels aren't cheap down there either.

Try the Hotel Roosevelt---loved that place!!

bummer. I'm not familiar with the two you've mentioned but I've stayed at the Hampton Inn Times Square several times and was very happy with it. Only one block from Broadway and very nice. Across the street is a restaurant called Sosa Borella which doesn't look like much from the outside but is pretty charming inside and good food. Down the street is Daniela Trattoria which is really nice for breakfast. (haven't been to it for lunch or dinner)

My parents always stay around the ESB when they visit. I think the Hotel Chandler is their favorite. FiDi is boring and I wouldn't want to stay in Times Sq
