Great athletes that you had no idea that they were over rated

Ozzie Smith
quote:
This is one of the great frauds in sports history. Ozzie is THE shining example of how an average player gets glorified by the media because of likeability. Ozzie Smith, without the flips and the great smile, is Craig Counsel. His career offensive numbers are absolutely laughable. In 19 years, he has 2,400 hits (less than one per game), a .262 batting average and a whopping 2 HR and 50 RBI average per year.
“But he’s a 15 time All Star” you shout! That supports the joke that is All-Star voting. Let’s look at his “All-Star” performances: .222, .248, .243, .254, .257. The guy hit .300 ONCE in his career, and barely! “But,” you protest, “Ozzie was a wizard in the field! He had 13 Gold Gloves!” So you are basing your other strong argument for Ozzie’s greatness on the second-most ridiculous “award” in sports—the popularity contest that is the Golden Glove. Again, let’s take a look. Only twice in 19 seasons did Ozzie field over .985, and he had over 20 errors in a season five times, or about 30% of his career.
Let’s compare Ozzie to a couple of his peers: Derek Jeter: Let’s not insult Derek like this. This is not even close in any category you pick, statistical, leadership, world titles, playoff wins, etc.
Omar Vizquel: Omar has more hits, HR, RBI and a better career batting average. In fact, he destroys Ozzie in every offensive category. So let’s move to defense. Omar is a LIFETIME .985 fielder, and only had 20 errors ONCE in 24 years. Again, sorry Ozzie, this isn’t even close. Even Omar Vizquel is far better than you are.
Honestly, if you look at numbers, both offensive AND DEFENSIVE, Ozzie Smith ranks somewhere around Tim Teufel and the aforementioned Craig Counsel. Seriously, look it up people. Ozzie Smith was average AT BEST. Realistically, he is completely average by any measure you want to make: no power, not a great fielder, didn’t hit for average, etc. The fact that Ozzie Smith is EVEN IN the Hall of Fame, let alone being a first ballot Hall of Famer, is embarrassing. Sorry I had to pull the curtain back on the Oz—but he is the most overrated athlete in sports history.

John Elway

quote:
Elway also didn't have his breakout season until about his 11th year in his career. Quarterbacks now days don't last three with those numbers. Elway had 300 touchdown passes in his career but only averaged 18.75 per season. In his first 9 seasons he passed for 158 touchdowns and 157 interceptions. Almost 1:1.
quote:
Denver won the Super Bowl in 1997 with Terrell Davis rushing for 1,750 yards and 15 touchdowns on the season and an overall 5th ranked defense. A repeat in the 1998 Super Bowl Terrell Davis had 2,008 yards and 21 touchdowns. You can't give Elway total credit for those Super Bowls.
quote:
In the 3rd season of his career he posted 22 touchdown passes, but also threw 23 interceptions. It was another 7 years before he broke the 20 touchdown mark. He finished his career with a 56.9 completion percentage. Elway won games, has two Super Bowl rings but if he was playing in the current time period, would he have a job? Statistically, Elway wasn't any better than guys like Jake Delhomme, Kyle Orton, Jason Cambell, or the better majority of quarterbacks who are being questioned about their jobs today.

I never really liked Cal Ripken Jr. Not sure why, but I felt like he was rolled out there toward the end just to keep adding games. Plus, I was a big Tony Gwynn fan, and since they retired the same year Cal got all the press.

I don't know shite about baseball and always assumed that guy was awesome.
Had no clue his stats were so terrible. What do the baseball purists say? Is he a running joke to those who really follow the game?

Ozzie Smith
True story. He was walking down this tunnel area after a spring training game with his teammates. My dad was able to stop him and told him that he was my favorite player and wanted his autograph. Ozzie stood by the fence of the tunnel as his entire team left to wait for my dad to quickly go buy a baseball so Ozzie could sign it.
He will always be the GOAT

You're stats'ing too hard again. Put your stats down for a little bit and do something nice for yourself.

The one that always jumps out is Troy Aikman. His SB stats obviously put him over the top, but his TD/INT ratio is pretty awful. 165/141

The stats are the stats, but watching the guy in the field was special. It wasn't just about flips and the other nonsense that idiot is spouting.
Others could chime in but despite the low BA, I remember him being a clutch hitter.
And the SS position was just becoming an offensive player position in his day. To compare him to Jeter is plain stupid.

On the Elway thing you have to compare him to QBs of that day and age. The way the rules are setup now it leads to incredibly inflated numbers across the board.
Not saying he is or isn't overrated, just that you can't compare QBs from different eras anymore

Namath isn't overrated because of the era he played in. in fact, it shows how great he was
archie manning is the epitome of overrated. he does have some hall of fame spunk though

He is the career leader in defensive WAR, and one of only 6 with a career dWAR above 300.

Ozzie smith's defense was the elite of the elite.

I'm a bit of a Fedtard, but if you want to point to the Nadal and Djokovic H2H and say he piled up wins against soft era Roddick and Hewitt types, the floor is yours.

His passing stats are mediocre. Yeah, if you consider how many hall of fame players he played with on the offensive side of the ball shows he was just an average quarterback at best.

We were always told this but his fielding was just average. Funny how the media can make you believe something that is not true.
