This got better.

Got 3 letters in the mail today! None of them for me, all for someone who used to live here. We have been in this house almost 8 years. He got 3 letters all at once. All 3 of them are notices for the same car, claiming to be 1st, 2nd and 3rd notices! At this point it seems like a horrible computer glitch but maybe they want to let it ride for a bit and see who they can get money out of?

I guess I'm waiting around for one of these letters to make it my way. I moved out of state a year ago. I never informed LA I didn't need their plate anymore. Hell, I think it's still sitting in my trunk from where I changed it out to TN tags. Though at this rate, it might be another decade before I receive the letter.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Your letter was probably sent to where ever you were living three or four moves ago.

The issue isn't directly about returning the plate, it's about driving without the compulsory liability coverage. If you get a letter, I'm sure you'll be able to show the vehicle was registered and insured in TN within days of your LA coverage being dropped.

collects all the "delinquent plates", melts tbem into a huge ball, and smashes into the OMV.

this ain't the OMV's doing. It's Bobby Jindal trying to raise money since he bankrupted the state. The word from the top is that they have to get at least $128 out of everyone who got a letter.

My dad overheard an OMV employee complaining on the phone that they don't pay her enough to deal with this. She had a line 10 deep of people with the same issue all pissed. INCLUDING a crying mother with a death certificate for her son that had died 8 years ago. Yeah. He got a letter too. Died in a car accident and neglected to return the license plate from the charred wreckage.

BEST PART!!!

if you don't pay then they are working through the us treasury department and can garnish your federal refund. Great!! Also these poor SOBs that are getting letters at an address they haven't lived at in 8-10 years won't have the opportunity to plead it down to $128. Next year at tax time POOF! Thought you had a $1,000 refund? Nope. Let's make that $400 and send the rest to Louisiana. Also gonna tax you on the full $1,000 refund next year.

FORWARD!!

I swear, can we all go down to the capital and tar and feather Piyush? I don't know a single Louisianan that has any sort of good feeling towards him. I'm ashamed I ever voted for the sonofabitch.

nope. That's what I thought. It's $128 for not answering the "first letter".

My car got totaled in July. They sent me this letter last month and I sent them back all the documents my insurance gave me in regards to that. They then sent me ANOTHER letter saying I never responded to the first one

12 years ago I moved to Texas and got a Texas license and insurance. My dad called and told me he got the same letter. I am not going to pay a fine plus interest for a lapse in insurance that did not happen.
Hey we are going wait until the interest has built up to a nice sized fine, then slap you with it. Just ignore the other 11 years we should of went after you with the bill.

The old phantom first letter trick. Louisiana at its finest right here.

Has any news outlets picked up this scam yet? I don't live in the state, so I have no idea. I have been checking the Nola.com and Baton Rouge advocate websites but have yet to see anything mentioned.

Yeah. Media and groups like ACLU should jump all over this. It's outrageous.

I haven't gotten a letter yet but I'm sure I will add I've had a couple of cars registered there and then moved out of state.

theres definitely a story here. Hundreds of thousands of these notices went out and they're garnishing federal tax refunds.

Well he promised to not increase taxes, so he has to find a way to impose clever fees for his presidential run

If it was 90 days ago or more it will be $525, not including other fees.

ETA: that's $525x2 and feesX2.

Wait so the state is all about consumer protection rights and forced corporations to abide by a very short 3 year SOL date to collect debt but they believe they can go beyond 10 years?

Is there any legal argument against paying this?

I'm almost positive I paid this fine already but I'm sure they'll deny it and I don't think I still have a receipt
