What is Ubuntu?

Gateway computer with window 7 and Ubuntu. Dual boots. Have no idea what Ubuntu or dual boots are. Cheap computer to keep in my truck for work is all I need it for. Thanks for the info

Ubuntu is an OS(operating system) similar to Windows.
A lot of people like it because it's easily customizable and can have less bloatware.

It's linux. It's not what it used to be.
Ubuntu is the most user friendly version of it.
It runs a lot like the mac operating system.
You can't run any windows software on it without some kind of emulator.
But for web browsing, email, etc it's a good choice.

I'm guessing "dual-boots" means if you wanted to and have a windows installation USB or disc you can probably put windows along side ubuntu and boot either one.

The image below is meant to be comical and for those who have dealt with this question before. Ubuntu, as stated, is just a different operating system. You can open MS Office documents (with OpenOffice) and get on the Internet (Chrome, Firefox, etc) just like you'd expect. You can open PDFs like normal.
It differs in that it almost exclusively runs open-source software. There's basically a program around to do anything you can think of. It's just not necessarily the one you're already used to.

User friendly version of Linux. I put it on an old computer I that did not have an OS. Works well for just surfing the net which is all said old computer is used for.

The general public is starting to care a little more, though, with all of the NSA stuff. Also, hopefully the VW mess will wake people up to the fact that so much of our world is controlled by software that we can't inspect. Did you ever stop to think that your vehicle's accelerator is controlled by software, and that you can't check it out to make sure it works correctly? The only people who can inspect the software are the people who have absolutely zero interest in making the problem publicly known.
Did you know that vehicles with systems like OnStar and Uconnect can be remotely controlled? Throttle, brakes, steering, radio, windshield wipers... everything? From anywhere in the world? Did you know that some of these systems can be (and have been) hacked? Is that not terrifying?
We need to get technical. We need to listen to technical people. We need to care about how the products we buy work. Especially when they are capable of killing people.
Did you know that you don't own your car? I bet the salesman didn't tell you that part.

I suspect you are in a lead role in a very technical environment. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think anyone has seriously claimed this, maybe with the exception of Slashdot "200X is the year of the Linux desktop!" nerds.

I did the Ubuntu thing when I was low on cash a while back and needed an OS. That was a few years back right before they switched to Unity. I liked it a lot, but it did have some software limitations, and you would sometimes have to venture into the terminal. I used CAD and GIS a lot at work and those things were impossible with Ubuntu. If you just need office stuff and media and internet, go for it. It's great for that. I would also game on it some with wine. I would highly recommend it if your requirements don't necessitate specialty software.
