Just finished The Sopranos - Question *Spoilers

Is there something I'm missing with the ending? I get Meadow trying to park builds up suspense and it's kinda like a last supper meal, but why cut it off as Meadow walks in. All in all great series, but feel that they left it with a huge cliffhanger.

The story is told from Tony's perspective. The big guy who goes to the bathroom comes out and shoots Tony in the back of the head. Tony never sees it coming and neither does audience.

It's obviously left open for interpretation. I tend to think Chase is showing Tony's fate as someone who'll be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life, knowing the inevitable may always be just a moment away. Pay attention to the song Tony was listening to at the table: I believe Chase didn't pick it randomly...
Oh, the movie never ends
It goes on and on, and on, and on

Tony's shot in the head at the end of the series in front of his family.

It's meant to be open to interpretation, but I think the best arguments are clearly in favor of Tony being killed.
I think this guy has done some updates recently, but here is a link to a ridiculously thorough explanation.
Recently David Chase made the claim that Tony Soprano is still alive, but the context and tone in which he said that made the answer unconvincing to those of us who go along with the "Tony was assassinated" plot.

Some people are positive Tony is dead.
People forget that they were toying with the idea of a movie when the show was canceled so I believe he left it open like that in case a movie happened and if not, he could always say Tony was clearly dead.

Every time the bell rings, he looks up and you experience Tony's POV for a few moments - it definitely generated a sense of paranoia - and what it feels like to be Tony Soprano. Chase has backed off of it, but that last one is supposed to represent Members Only guy coming out of the bathroom and whacking Tony in front of his family.
In any event, my initial take was that it was ambiguous - that it is never going to get easy for Tony Soprano (even if you reject the obvious interpretation that was the moment of his death - and I've wavered back and forth on that) - and that he's going to be looking over his shoulder whether he lives 1 more second or 50 more years.

Its left up to you to decide what happens. I thought the show and the ending was great. It let me finish the story the way I wanted to.
He lives and he won the war. The end

The best evidence for Tony being dead has to do with a conversation that was had regarding being assassinated. Something along the lines of: You will never see it coming; it will be like the lights just went out.
They even had a flashback to the conversation in or near the finale.

The visual language of the last scene supports the theory that Tony was whacked. There's a rhythm that gets established where Tony hears the door to the restaurant open and reacts, then they cut to his POV shot of the person coming inside. This happens three times.
In this interpretation, the black screen is really the final shot - the shot from the point of view of a dead guy.
I agree with the people who say it's a cop-out ending, though. There's this argument that the caliber of the ending is demonstrated by how much discussion it has inspired, but it's not like disappointment doesn't inspire discussion.

Tony had New York's boss whacked in front of his grand kids and with his head crushed they couldn't even have an open casket. There's no way that members jacket guy wasn't sent there by NY to whack Tony.

you can't argue with the explanation...the bell, point of view, etc.
...a lot of thought and direction goes into these scenes that isn't always so obvious to the casual viewer.
fantastic ending, and the greatest series of all time in my humble opinion
