2. it makes the US look weak b/c we stupidly made comments about Assad being bad a few years ago and now russia is likely going to ensure his victory. so the optics of it rub people the wrong way
It's not really stupid to acknowledge Assad is bad. He is bad, he's a horrible human being who slaughters innocents. But, he's preferable to ISIS.

Why is Russia attacking Syria bad for the US?
Russia isn't attacking Syria. Russia is only attacking the Syrian rebels who are against Assad, therefore, keeping him and his gov't in power. It is very interesting that they are bringing in such specialized weaponry (esp to defend the port) that isn't needed to fight the rebels (or even ISIS)..in other words, think ships and aircraft.
And, Russia hasn't attacked ISIS. And, don't forget that the anointed one has declared that Assad must go.

I would encourage OTer's to watch "Vice" on HBO. They also have articles on youtube regarding the conflict in Syria.
The most chilling was an interview with a captured ISIS lieutenant. "We have a vision for the Caliphate. We won't rest until the entire world is one with the Caliphate". Vice then cuts to a white ISIS soldier declaring that they will fight "until the black flag flies over Buckingham Palace and the White House"
Kill them, kill them all...
Posters here think that the Syrian conflict boils down to an "either or" choice between ISIL and Assad. I disagree. Take out both....NOW

This. I'll be so glad to see these subhuman cockroaches have to ride their camels back into the desert, never to be heard from again.

I understand your argument, and I don't like Russia thinking they beat us, but do you really want to lose American lives over a shithole like Syria*?
*I put China for some odd reason, that is not what I meant.

How would that work? Create another vacuum for another ISIS to fill?
Assad's value is as a strongman who will purge radicals from Syria.

The sad truth of what's going on in the Middle East is we have placed ourselves in a position where our options are very limited. Our influence in the region has waned to pre-WWI levels. Really, we've only got two options left.
1. Engage in Syria to try and back up the rebels we've been "supporting". This of course will very likely end up with us involved in a full scale war at least in Syria, and at worst across the region and even Europe against Russia. This option would be an unmitigated disaster for the entire world.
2. Accept the fact that our position in the Middle East has weakened to the point that we have to accept that Russia now is the major player in that region via it's alliance with Syria & Iran. This option is far easier than option 1 but do not fool yourself into thinking this is a good thing for the US either.
I hate to say it, but there really are no good options left for the US in the Middle East at this point.

Serious question Darth:
Why not? Shouldn't we be looking for our energy solutions elsewhere besides that shite hole? We don't really have any interest there besides an archaic form of energy right?

Everyone here seems to have forgotten Assad openly supported terrorism against Israel. It would be unconscionable to allow him back into power.
Furthermore, none of the millions of refugees would ever return to their homeland.
I do not believe in tucking tail just because the Russians are strong arming us at the moment.
Reagan taught us one thing very well. When dealing with the Russians you stand up straight, look them dead in the eye and say, "Not today shithead"

frick it. I say we throw down. It's gonna happen sooner or later. No time like the present.

We possess every tactical, economic, and strategic advantage at the moment.
Russia is a "paper bear" but growing stronger everyday. If we simply pullback from Syria, we won't lose influence in the Middle East only. We will also lose Eastern Europe. Those nations will see the USA as lacking the heart to fend off Russian influential expansion.

I don't want American lives spent - I was just stating the facts for open discussion. And one of the glaring facts is that our illustrious leader has painted us into a corner.

I agree that ISIS needs to be taken out. I also agree Assad is not a good ally of the US. But let's be honest. Unless we want to risk direct war with Russia, Assad is not going anywhere. Russia is going to wipe out the rebels we support first, they've started that process already. And once they're done with that, they along with Iran and it's proxy Hezbollah, will turn their attention to wiping out ISIS in both Syria and Iraq.
And if I were a betting man, when it's all said and done, Iraq as we know it will either be totally wiped off the map, or at least will see some sort of partition with both Syria & Iran gaining at it's expense. This then leads to another question;
1. What will the effect of a Middle East dominated by a Russia, Syria, Iran Axis be on the world stage?
2. How will Saudi Arabia react to having on it's northern border a Iraq that's a puppet to a emboldened and very strong Iran backed by Russia and by them probably armed with nuclear weapons?
3. How will Jordan, a pretty good American ally, react to a reinvigorated Syria sitting on it's doorstep?
4. How will a much stronger Hezbollah, puppet of a much stronger Iran, act towards Israel? Already just this week it's been reported that Syria has given them enough tanks to equip it's own armored division so it's obvious Hezbollah is about to go through a massive expansion. Right now that expansion is to fight the enemies of Assad. Once that task is done, Hezbollah (and thus Iran) will once again turn it's attention to Israel. And I'm sure, when the time comes, Syria will be more than happy to repay their allies for the help they're giving them today.
So you see, like I said in my other post, giving Russia and it's allies a dominate role in the Middle East can and will have serious consequences. I'm not saying we need to risk war with Russia to stop it. I'm just pointing out that allowing Russia to have a free hand in the Middle East will probably not end up well for us either.

I agree. I also don't feel good about our military sharing space with the Russians and the Chinese in an hostile environment. Depending on how bad the inevitable incident is I'm not sure if the same restraint we've used in earlier conflicts will be observed. Unless the US is willing to absorb some casualties without retaliation I fear that this won't end well.

I've had enough of the pseudo wars we wage in the middle east. Just get the frick out and stay the frick out. This is a tremendous over reach of a county's power and a stupid waste of life and time. We aren't going to turn Syria into a fun loving rainbow land.
So we should let Putin turn it into what he pleases? How many countries should we let him do this with?
When it comes time to stand up to them and they have more pieces on the chess board what are we supposed to do?
We aren't running around trying to control everyone for fun, if we don't someone else certainly will. It's simply advancing pawns across the board to protect your king. The majority of the worlds governments are puppets of a world power

Why would it have to be nuclear? Either we stand our "ground" as it seems the admin has drawn another line, or we just cave in once again, much like we did with Iran. If shots are fired, does one really think Russia wants it assure its destruction by going nuclear????
