Too much hype too early for Fournette?

Or will it continue to build? Hard to imagine how crazy this place is gonna be if we run the table...but I think the talking heads may have known what they were talking about with us in the playoffs

All the hype makes me a bit nervous because we haven't had this much hype around 1 single player in a long time.

The Heisman is as much about hype and PR departments as it is about accomplishment. The more his name is mentioned the better it will for him in December.

The question is, is the kid prepared and grounded enough to absorb the attention? The answer appears to be yes in Leonard's case.

It helps that he is a humble kid and not bragging to media. He is already handling it in the correct, mature manner.

Fournette has been hyped since the 8th grade. A lot of kids are, but, so far, he's living up to it.

(ETA: For a little perspective - let us not forget that just 2 years ago, high schoolers were being asked to tackle this smallish locomotive - and they did. Try to process that while remembering what he did to Auburn - breaking 14 tackles on 19 carries).

As long as he, and just as importantly- the players around him, keep performing like this (can handle a slight step back too)- YES

I'm perfectly ok with the school/staff/teammates hyping him to holy hell and LF kinda hovering out/above the fray if that's what it takes. Conditional on Leonard just keep being Leonard AND it the season stays about winning the SECW first, not about LF's awards. When I say this I'm mainly thinking of football staff, the department, and the school as a whole... not any players including LF.

On the whole, you never know how it may be needed to help the team. Let's say we beat OM and lose to Bama (or whatever) and end up needing a tie breaker to get into the SECCG, and then lose that one in a close one. The hype that follows LF could be helpful with that committee and could be a/the difference maker in their decision. It is a different world now. Star power, hype, and marketing DO have an effect.

Les Miles is the perfect coach to manage the hype surrounding LF. The Syracuse game wasn't scheduled by accident. New York media will springboard LF to the top of the race and barring injury, LSU will have it first Heisman winner in 56 years.

I think the hype is justified, but I'd rather be under the radar IMO. I want teams to not know what hit them.

It seems that every since LF did the Heisman pose, Coach Miles set his mind straight and he has grown into a solid man on a mission.

It's just right. The other day I had an LSU shirt on and a complete stranger walked up to me wanting to talk about him. This guy said he won't miss another LSU game this year after he saw what he did against Auburn.

Imagine what it would have been like if people compared him to Adrian Peterson coming out of high school!

The guy is used to dealing with this kind of hype, he will deal with it well.

No way there is too much hype. If there is, it's for good reason. Even on the syracuse website for their scouting report, they have three of four paragraphs about Fournette and LSU's rushing.
quote:

Sophomore running back Leonard Fournette leads the nation in rushing entering Saturday's contest, averaging 193.5 yards per game. Fournette also ranks first nationally in scoring, averaging three touchdowns per contest.

Against Auburn, Fournette ran the ball 19 times for 228 yards on the ground. His 12.0 yards per carry is an LSU school record and 228 rushing yards ranks seventh in Tigers' single-game history.

Coming into Saturday's game at the Carrier Dome, LSU ranks among one of the top rushing offenses in the country. The Tigers are rushing for 338.5 yards per contest, which ranks fifth nationally.

I guess you are worried that he peaked too early in the season. If he puts up solid numbers without highlight real moments later in the year, then perhaps a hot player with a big moment later in the season could overtake him.

Let's face it, LSU's schedule the next few weeks is lackluster. However, I think that sets up nicely for him. He'll have some games that he can simply get his yards and sit. Regardless, he needs a few good runs to keep voters watching.

What actually sets up nicely is that he can pad his stats in October, and will be on the biggest stage come November vs the 3 biggest contenders in our division.
