How bad is Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken" movie?

That book is one of my all-time favorites and I keep hearing the movie is just shite. Is it really that bad?
Why did they have let her direct that movie? That story should be a 10 part series by Spielberg and Hanks like Band of Brothers. It might be the greatest story of a single individual that has ever been told (spare me the religious stuff, you know what I mean).

not bad at all...book was better

I read the book long before ever seeing the movie and I was very disappointed in the movie. It wasn't terrible... but there is just too much of his story to tell in a 2 hour (or however long) movie. I agree it needed to be a mini-series like Band of Brothers, that would have been awesome.
At the same time there were people I know that had never read the book and thought the movie was awesome. So I guess for people that don't know the full story from the book, don't know what all they're missing, and thought it was good.

I hated the movie but I think there was a lot more wrong than just the director. It's impossible to condense that guys life into a three hour movie for one thing. It should have been a mini-series.
Biggest gripe of movie is that they didn't even touch on his troubles once the war was over or his vengeance for the crazy Japanese a-hole.
It would have been tough as hell but I would have liked to see more of a Forest Gump type story where they never dwell to long on any aspect, especially the bad.

Maybe Hanks/Spielberg can get the rights to make an HBO series like Band of Brothers based off of the book.
That would be incredible IMO.
Spoilers:
I agree that it seems impossible to get that story into a movie. There is so many stages to it and each one is as important as the next. Just unreal from the poor childhood to meeting Hitler to his college friend being a spy to the plane crash to the ocean survival to the torture camps and rescue.
Just nuts.

It is not that the movie is bad, but that it could have been much, much better. The book is the best story I have ever read.
SPOILER ALERT:
Can't believe they left out the scene of him actually meeting Hitler at the Olympics.

Loved the book. Thought the movie was a pile of shite.
GF wanted to desperately see the movie. So I watched again with her to see how a non-reader felt about it. She fell asleep. Subsequently read the book, and it only furthered her opinion that the movie sucked.
I'm not one who shits on movies just to sell the book. If Unbroken was on in my office right now I'd probably be more productive because it is far less tempting to pay attention to than anything else I do.
As many have said on here, it is way too ambitious a project for a movie of that length. Should have been a miniseries.

It's fairly bad, but not terrible. I'd say about a 4/10.
Didn't read the book.

it wasn't bad, it just wasn't memorable.

Definitely not bad. But like happens most of the time, it's not as good as the book.

Not bad, but not that good either.

It was good.
But long-winded.
Heavy-handed film-making.
Too polished for this story. Glossy.
A raw version would have been better.

Bad. The bird was the worst casting I've seen in a long time, and he's the second most important in the story and major conflict.

legitimately terrible.
For a story like that the attempt was pathetic
it's damn near torture porn but with no character development along the way.
