they taste great but the copper mug is a turn off. something about it just doesn't look right. like you are trying too hard or something.

I've recently discovered this fantastic cocktail. They are great for the summer.
I don't have copper mugs, so have just been making them in regular hi-ball glasses. Do they really taste different in the Copper mugs?
I'm using
Ketel One
Trader Joes Ginger Beer
Lime Juice
Didn't have any mint on hand, so haven't been using mint. Does it really need the mint? Will it make it even better?
In what form are y'all using mint? A liquid extract or actual mint leaves? Asking b/c the mint extract would be better for me as it wouldn't really go bad quickly and i'd d more likely to have it always on hand.
The copper does taste a bit different but is not that big a deal, the mint comes from a plant that cost less than one buck and is impossible to kill.
However you should enjoy yours however you like.

Except that is it is not trying too hard. It is the way they were created.

If I don't have a copper mug with me I just put a couple pennies in the corner of my mouth :/
I've never put mint in it but I've got a neighbor that does

Do yourself a favor and go get Maine Root ginger brew at Whole Foods and make this drink. It takes on a completely different character because Maine Root is a very spicy ginger beer. My recipe is juice of 2 lime wedges, 2 dashes angostura bitters, 2 oz Russian Standard, shake and pour, and then top off with Maine Root in a copper mug.

First time I had one it was in a regular glass but had mint. Since then Ive only had them in a copper mug without mint. They all taste the same to me, mug or not.

Copper mug certainly not necessary. As I recall this drink was entirely made up by a vodka salesman with too much Smirnoff on his hands. He added the copper mug to develop the story.

Its a nice attention to detail (i.e. if a bar has them you know they're paying attention to the little things) but by no means is it necessary. Its actually a pretty lousy drink.

I agree. Necessary or not. It's like pouring beer in the correct glass. Most of us can't tell the difference in flavors but the details are what matter.

Ita not really a lousy drink as a Buck is one of the mother cocktails. They can be quite refreshing. Now as others have mentioned, its better with other base spirits like bourbon or rum

By the way, the copper mugs used to be ridiculously pricey ($30+) and had to be purchased at like W&S or other specialty stores.
Mules are so popular now that there's a surplus of mugs, so you can find them at TJ Maxx and/or Marshall's half the time, now for around $5.
It was my wife's drink for the last couple of years, but we're about to move on. The Ginger Beer (barrett's) around here costs as much as a six pack of good craft beer, now. Freaking gouging consumers. Used to cost $2 a sixer. Not it costs around $8 a six pack. Stupid.

They won't be the solid copper at that price. They are the ones plated with copper. Which defeats the purpose of the chemical reaction with the copper.
To the extent that is relevant.

I almost always use mint. I think it makes the drink. And the copper mug shouldn't affect the taste - just the coldness of the drink.
Table in Baton Rouge uses mint in their MMs.

Bin 77 makes a Rosemary Mule with a sprig of Rosemary in the drink. It's really good.

I've had gin mules in both copper mugs and regular glasses. Not much different to me other than the copper mug seems to sweat a lot more, which is annoying.
This summer I've been making a drink with Hendrick's some lime, a bit of ginger beer, Schweppes diet tonic and some cucumber juice-I puree and then strain out the pulp and keep it in the fridge. Quite refreshing and tasty.
