I have 2 older units that are held together with duct tape and baling twine. My A/C guy says when they fall over and die I should replace with Trane.

Ruud is owned by Rheem. Solid equipment. 6400 for cond. and air handler? Presumably 410a? If so, that's very good pricing as long as the contractors legit.
It's for everything including the heating system except for the air ducts. My current system is on the old freon so they will have to change all of that.
I can't wait until December b/c I'm without AC.

How much per month was your bill then and now?
How much more did you pay for the 20 SEER over the cost of a 14 SEER?

Just had Kelley Scott put in a Carrier variable 5 speed 19 seer unit. Wasn't cheap, but they were considerably cheaper than River City 1 Hour Air.

Can someone tell me when upgrading from a 15 yr old unit, will they need to run an extra wire to the outside condenser for a 16 seer unit? One guy is telling they have to, another one is saying no.

Not sure what you mean by an extra wire. A new 240VAC supply wire?

I'm not real sure either. I had someone I know say that if I went up front a 14 seer to a 16 seer, they would need to run an extra wire to the outside unit to get the full 16 seers.

I had 2 2.5 ton Trane units installed this spring. $8600 for it all, and they have been great so far.

Either way, a little extra wiring won't be a big deal in comparison to retrofitting the complete A/C unit.

Mine were 15 years old, no new wiring needed.

I'm not upset about the wiring, just trying to make sure the guy that said he didn't need it wasn't trying to cut corners.

You probably need to quiz them a little harder in order to find out for sure what their strategy is. Maybe do some independent research after getting some detailed answers from them.

I went from 10 seer to 14 seer units and it was just the heat pump and inside unit they replaced. Used the same wiring and duct work.

I personally would not buy a variable speed system. Not only are they more expensive, but there's too much computer bullshite on them. Neighbor installed a Carrier Infinity system with all bells and whistles. Loved it at first. Then 1 month out of warranty Thermostat quit working. Then the fan motor. 1 year later fan motor quit again. All that energy efficiency is out the drain when the fan motor costs over $1000. Get a tradional 16 seer Amana.

If they install new copper line set, they might run a new thermostat wire.

Do NOT use One Hour Heating and Air - TOTAL RIP OFF

Just got a 4 ton Ruud 14 Seer without duct work. I did get a new programable thermostat. $5000 complete Michael's Maintanence. Upgraded from a 13 year old 10 seer Carrier. Very pleased
