I guess so, but damn, $4000 to cut a tree down next to the house (with crane) just seems crazy.

No doubt some are crooks. I liken most in the business to roofers. But it's seasonal work and hard to make a good living doing it.

Thanks to all for the comments. I'm waiting to hear back on a couple of quotes. Prepare the anus is the feeling I'm getting, but can't let the damn thing fall on our house.

It was rated most dangerous by forbes two years in a row. That makes for sky high cost to do business legit.

I'll add to what the other poster said. Don't just ask for proof of license and insurance, call and verify them to make sure it's current.

Last time I priced one out near Lafayette the guy told me it was a 500$ minimum. That covered cutting it down, removal, and grinding of the stump.

That's a steal

A tree guy? Short on beer money?

They're called arborists and you act like this shite is done by Joe Blow off of Craigslist. That's not how it works and is stupid advice on your part.

"Find a tree guy short on beer money" and you'll find yourself asking the guy why he didn't have the proper license and insurance when he lands that tree on your house.

Most of the tree cutting companies I have used do not own a crane, so that has to be factored in. I have hired cranes from several companies in south LA, a crane to take down the average water oak would be one of the smaller ones which rent for $200-250/hour including the operator, with a 4 hour minimum, and travel time is paid the same as on site time.

this, find a professional.

We had a cherry tree removed for $700, but they got to sell the cherry. would have been close to 3k if they didn't want the wood.

Why are you having it removed? Simply don't want it anymore? How far from the house in feet is it? If it's 50 feet tall is it 25 feet from the house or hanging over the house?

In Baton Rouge I've had a tree guy come quote me $2000 thinking he had to take my fence down and bring in a crane. A second guy came in and quoted me $500. He climbed up the tree, pulled up a saw and trimmed down the broken problem branches and was gone in less than an hour. It's apparently a field where people just pull dollar figures out their arse.

Paid $5k to remove a big live oak from my back yard. They had to bring in crane, etc due to location of tree. Was a big operation...mine was covered/approved by insurance.

How do I know the guy is really licensed and insured? I recently hired a company to take down two trees behind my house and they gave me a flier that says they are licensed and insured but I don't know if that is true or not. Should I ask to see licenses and insurance papers? What is my liability if they tell me they are insured but then turn out to not be?

Yep, I contacted an arborist, and he subbed the job out to the local crackhead who probably wasn't covered under his insurance.

Ask them for a copy or who it is through, then call them to verify it. All claim it but not all have it.

Not if it is on your property...i had a big water oak taken down for $1000,but i kept the wood and brush to burn myself...would have been more if they have to haul it off.they have to pay over $200 to haul off a load of wood.

I'm having it removed because it's dying. All the leaves are completely brown already and no other tree in the area is like that
