Went to my first 22lr match today out at Palo Alto. Had no idea what to expect. My buddy convinced me to go after coming across it online. It was his first match as well. He's got a moded out tactical solutions 10/22 and I have a bone stock marlin 60. We were blown away by the setups everyone had we expected modded rugers and cz's but everyone there was all custom. Running 36 and 50x power scopes and the gun rest were crazy. Today's match was 100yrd and all things considered I thought my buddy and I shot well. He had a bipod and I shot off a folded up towel. Neither of us had ever shot further than 50 yards before today. We had a blast even with the cheapest equipment out there. We hope to go shoot out there again.

Do most of them use semi-autos? Not bolt actions?

Everyone there had a custom built bolt action. We had the only semi autos

One of my sons was interested in that about 8 years ago. Once we talked to the organizer of a local club we noticed there were very expensive setups $1000 rifles so to speak. My son said to forget about that crap, he'll keep doing what we were doing which was shooting targets at 50 yards and plinking.

1k wouldn't touch any of these rifles. I'd say each guy had 5-6 k in gun, optic, rest, and misc like wind indicators and such.

I've shot competitive 22RF when Hub City Range (Lafayette) was still in operation 12-15 yrs ago. I had a custom built Sako Finnfire, Lilja barrel, Jewell 2 oz. trigger, LEU fixed 36x scope, as rifle weighed 10.5 lbs.
It's all about the ammo to be consistent and shoot tiny groups or scores. When the right ammo was found most people bought pallets full of the same lot ammo. Rem 40x, Anschutz, and custom single shot actions were the norm.
Lots of fun yet it takes money to win and be competitive . I still have my same aforementioned rifle and use it to shoot squirrel

I wanted to get into it, but the lack of available ammo kind of shut me down. My gun shoots Federal Ultramatch best, and it is very hard to find, and pretty damn expensive. I can get inch groups at 100 when I'm on. I don't use any fancy rests or anything though. It's either a single sandbag or my Camelback.
Funny thing is that the gun shoots Thunderbolts second best
Eta: Bone stock CZ 452 with a Mueller APT on it
