You gotta be kidding me.
Also, these pussies should be paddling upriver. Downriver just get out in the current and you will win.

if you fall in the MS River with a life jacket on, is that enough to save you from drowning? The currents and whirlpools are wicked.
No the ms river will not just pull you under water. The main danger on the river is boat traffic and the wakes they throw capsizing smaller vessels. There are also a lot of navigational hazards for boats because the water levels are so variable and if you're not in the channel you can easily run aground or into a jetty, log, etc.
The other danger for swimmers is that the current can pull you away from land much like a riptide, and if you're not a strong swimmer you will get exhausted if you try to fight it.

They must not value their lives very much.

You do you realize if they tried to paddle upstream they'd just go backwards right?

Ever been in the river? There are plenty of places along the edges that have slack water (or even currents going upstream), and a strong paddler can easily make headway upstream if you're not trying to fight the main current. The speed of the river in New Orleans is about 3mph, although it changes depending on the river level.

Fwiw the river is definitely the lowest I've seen it all year.

Watch out for runaway slaves camped out on river bars. I read a book about that.

After I paddled a whole day in oranage beach on the paddle board, I could walk right for five fricking days.

I did the race in a kayak. It was a lot of fun. The people who put on the event deserve a lot of credit, it was very well organized. The river bank downriver just a bit from the bridge is very scenic.

They closed one of the biggest, most important rivers in the world for a bunch of tards to paddle surfboards around?
I am having a hard time believing that

Asking for trouble right. Just saw that there are dozens of yolo boarders on the miss river. Seems really crazy to me.
I laugh when i see them on Mississippi in downtown St.Louis.
I've watched that river take a tug boat down. It's a dangerous River, with major undertows, currents, and nasty arse water.

We used to put the ski boat in it and hang out on the sand bars all day. Fishing or whatever.
The dangerous part though was the sandbars. The water can carve out underneath the sand and it will cave in when you walk on it and suck you under for good.

River was closed. By closed, meaning traffic is shut down for a window of time, not cleared. People can go around.
Kayaks, canoes, paddlers, etc.
Multiple coast guard and police boats as escorts.
