It wasn't "blocks" of tickets but LSU players used to sell the tickets allotted for their respective families all the time. Decades ago, LSU would even sell them on the players behalf and give the money to the players. Which seems pretty illegal by today's NCAA standards.

As an LSU fan in my 30s, I'd be fine if I never heard his name again. Any player who didn't have to play against black athletes shouldn't be considered better than anyone playing today. I've seen his "run". Not that magical to me.
Sorry but I just don't see the hype. Geaux Tigers!

Cannon could and would play today. Give him the coaching , training, and suppliments of today...he'd STILL be a star. But comparing anyone from the old days to today without comparable training can't be done. For one, Cannon's talent was purely natural. Today's athletes are groomed and trained from grade school.

I do agree somewhat with the comments about improvements to strength and conditioning, and this effect. Either way, you can't deny the dramatic impact black athletes have had on college football. Billy Cannon would not have been "Billy Cannon" in today's college football.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Cannon's combination of size and speed is rare even in this era of training/nutrition.
i cant wait to read this book.

"blocks" of tickets
He told me the only difference now is that the reporter would have put it on ESPN and had the NCAA all over the school. They took care of the players and kept their mouths shut.

He was world class in the 100m dash and the shotput. The guy was a freak of nature. He'd still be a stud these days with modern nutrition and training. He was 6'1" 215 lbs on a 50's diet. I think he'd make an All-American LB with modern weight lifting and training.
There are still white guy freaks out there, they are just a little more rare.

Another fun fact, he is very much into horse racing and knows a ton about raising race horses.

FYI: Cannon was the original juicer. Griswold is more than correct but for a different reason.
Cannon used steroids in HS and college.
