When some of you legitimately think that Armageddon is objectively a well made, well written, well produced work of art
well i'm not claiming it's art, but...
it's well made/produced and the acting isn't really that bad (i'd say it's pretty good). the cinematography, sets, costumes, etc are great.
but it's not well written and the story is ridiculous. however, admittedly, it is a disaster movie in space. considering the genre, there aren't many well written disaster movies with a non-ridiculous story. it has endless plot holes and it is ultimately silly, but it's not sharknado
it's probably in the top tier (if not the very best) of movies that have ridiculous stories with major plot issues

Its "terribleness" is underrated.

I agree with pretty much all of that.
And for a movie to be "good" to me, it has to be entertaining, first and foremost. And Armageddon is vastly entertaining to me, for a number of reasons.
I'll even say that I think the story is cool and everything that happens "makes sense" enough to not spoil my viewing. Does that mean that I believe any of the shite in there is real? Of course not, but I don't usually go to movies trying to pick apart every single thing that doesn't make sense...if so, then 99% of all movies would piss me off at some point or another.
It's similar to the "computer virus" angle in ID4. It makes sense within the framework of the movie, so I was cool with it. Of course it's pretty ridiculous, but why should I let that straight up ruin the movie for me?
There's so much to like about Armageddon that the stupid/silly things don't bother me. It's funny to me how many people seem to let those things bother them to the point of not actually enjoying it.

Other than Affleck and Tyler (and they were serviceable, in this film - of course, I only saw it the one time, and that was years and years ago), I've been complimentary of the acting in the film in this thread and in other places.

Nice understatement, Jake.

well it's a disaster movie. they're all ridiculous and pretty much all poorly written. it's just the genre
once you get past that, though, the actual elements of plot and creating drama and emotion are (shockingly) done well

"See what happened right there, girls? That was stupid. I promise you that in a similar situation - I'M coming back, not your stupid boyfriend. He sacrificed himself, essentially for nothing (Ben Affleck ). You can always get another boyfriend. You only have 1 father. Now - if he were your husband and the father of your children? Maybe I think a couple of seconds more, but I'm still coming back. I mean, you'll have insurance if that's the case - and, again, you'll be able to find another husband. You only have 1 father, and yours is awesome."

Unfortunately it was also Ben Affleck

A good cast alone doesn't equal a good film. It's a hilariously bad movie that's unaware of how intellectually offensive it is. I think it just got a little worse at the mere mention of it being underrated.

I'm sorry guys.
But every time I see a scene from Armageddon, I get chills.
It's just cemented that much into my past that it's important to me.
I don't think that teaching an astronaut to drill vs teaching drillers to be astronauts is a good argument. These drillers were only astronauts in the sense of they were explorers. They were practically passengers until they got to the asteroid where they drilled.
If you know about all the precautions that NASA takes with their astronauts it's because they are vary wary of their investments.
The only investment they need here is 1 of the 2 ships and one of the armadillos to make a hole. The rest is expendable. Hell, they didn't even have to return!
So, if you have a crew of expert drillers who are passengers, wouldn't that be easier? And to match this reasoning to reality...in a recent episode of Mythbusters the two hosts trained for ONLY a few days to fly in a plane that has the highest cruising altitude. The Space Station is the next highest manned object. These 2 civilians trained to ride in a craft far more difficult to be in than a space shuttle.
So to those of you saying that it's easier to teach astronauts to drill, you have a real world example of how that's not the most reliable reasoning.

I like how out of all the movies to call you out the most, the M/TV Board chose this one!

Even Michael Bay thinks this movie sucks. Consider the enormity of that.
