Will the John Wick trilogy end up being better than the Matrix trilogy?

John Wick and the Matrix are closely linked. The two directors of John Wick worked as Reeves' stunt doubles in the Matrix movies.
John Wick is being made into a trilogy. I'd argue that the first John Wick is a work of art just like the first Matrix. There's a lot of similarities between the first Matrix and the first John Wick. Both movies were successful but not necessarily huge hits. They were sort of ahead of their time and developed a cult following which, in the case of the Matrix, led to an immensely successful movie franchise. I see the same opportunity for the John Wick franchise.
However, the Wachowskis went off the deep end with the second and third Matrix movies, and since then their movies have sucked when compared to the first Matrix. In fact, nothing they've filmed since Bound and the first Matrix have come close to being as good as those two movies.
Will the directing team behind John Wick lose themselves in movies two and three like the Wachowskis due to fame, bigger budgets, and higher expectations? Or, will they perhaps end up making one of the best film trilogies ever?
For some weird reason, I think when we look back and compare the Matrix trilogy to the John Wick trilogy, John Wick will stand out as the FAR better trilogy. I truly believe the John Wick universe will prove to be one of the best trilogies ever filmed.
Fingers crossed.

i dont think this is a wild prediction at all
i think the matrix trilogy sucked
the first movie was amazing and the individual movies were entertaining for their action, but the trilogy storyline went a little crazy
John Wick will be the better trilogy if only because its not trying to be too much bigger than what it is: really great action

If John Wick sticks to the MO, it will be better. I don't know if it will be more successful, but it will be better.

I get what you're saying, but every trilogy has the potential to go off the rails if the writers/directors try to do too much with the story like the Wachowskis did with the Matrix trilogy.
John Wick could easily go off the rails if the wirter and directors lose focus.
However, I have a feeling (considering the directors' backgrounds) that they will make a trilogy that is just as focused as their action sequences...which would be incredible! I think that the directors are probably smart enough to realize where the Matrix went wrong, especially since they worked on the Matrix trilogy with Keanu Reeves.
The way I look at it, the directors could have been poorly influenced by their time on the Matrix sets to make a John Wick movie that tried too hard to be something bigger.
But they didn't. They made an extremely focused John Wick movie that is (in my opinion) a perfect action movie.
That's very telling. These two directors are a product of the extremely large and flamboyant Matrix world yet they created a simple world that is the exact opposite of the Matrix world - they created a focused world full of possibility.
They could've easily went off the deep end and they didn't.
I think that's a good sign.

Well said. The directors need to realize that (at this point) the John Wick trilogy will 100 percent be successful considering the cult following the first movie already has developed.
Their movies don't need to make as money as the Matrix movies to be extremely successful.
The John Wick directors are the next big thing, but they don't have to become the Wachowskis to define their success.

I hope im wrong, but I don't think I will be
you have to flip the script a bit to keep it fresh, i.e. the raid 2. if the raid 2 would've been straight fighting for 90 minutes like the 1st one, it would've gotten tired and tedious REAL quick. instead they changed it up and made it a 2.5 hour tragic Asian crime opera with flashes of action and a giant sploogefest at the end, and it kicked arse
Wick 2 has to do something similar, and it won't. it will be another 90 minutes of acrobatic shooting from center axis relock stance with double taps and lots of headshots, just like the first. it will get stale

Unless they choose to abandon the John Wick storyline in favor of The Continental hotel storyline, which is full of potential....especially if we discover that this underground world exists across the entire globe which we have to assume it does.

Wick could suffer the same fate of Taken.
Most people on here had wood for the first movie then hated the next 2.
I loved Taken. I think it just caught me off guard. 2 was terrible. I couldn't even finish it.
Same could happen with Wick.

It took you reading the title to know who started this thread? Weird...you could've just looked at the name of the user who started the thread.
I swear some people are functionally retarded. What a shame.

Yeah unless Wick gets a kitten from his mother or something you need to expand that world to carry a trilogy. The continental is it.

As long as one of the directors doesn't become a chick, it will be a huge victory for humankind.
I don't think any of the Wicks will be as good as the Matrix, but collectively, they could be better than the Matrix trilogy. I think that's what you were getting at in the OP.

John Wick has a chance to get better, not worse, we just don't know yet (The Matrix honestly had the same chance.)
The world-building they did with Wick was fantastic and they have to ride that line between exploring just a bit more, creating more intrigue, more interest, and a deeper world. There are some cool directions they should go.
The film should move away from revenge and focus on another primal instinct. Maybe protection this time?

I'm hoping they don't make any sequels and just let John Wick stand alone as is.
