I was thinking the same thing...must have been scary as hell to see headlines about the advances of the germans everyday in the headlines...

Best article title ever.
Actually it's not the best, there is one from across the river in waterproof, LA that said "Waterproof Negro Drowns". That is the best, have a copy of that paper frame somewhere, it hung on the wall in my grandfathers office for years

Is it bad I chuckled until I saw they were black?
Wanna know what kind of building 200 people couldn't force their way out of?

Well. Nellie's was still able to survive...
ETA: Nellie's was a whorehouse that was granted prostitution in Natchez. Only under the terms that the heir of Nellie(black folk) would continue running it, because it is a resort town/city...

Miss Nellie was badly burned when a drunk potential patron was turned away then came back pissed off and set the place on fire.
She passed away shortly thereafter and I don't think it ever reopened, supposedly once her "black book" disappeared.
At least that's what I was told.
ETA: Edited. Thanks Dr T

Miss Nellie would not approve of the un-gentlemanly misspelling of her name.
Or so I've heard...

What happened Bullfrog. Was a guy had been kicked out by Nellie. He came back, and Nellie, and him got in a fight after he pored gas all over the front porch. The guy light the porch on fire, and they both burned...
ETA: GOD DAMNIT. You're right DoctorTechnical. I'll let Nellie bitch slap me in the afterlife for misspelling her name in the present...

One of her offspring ran it for a little while after, but it did not have the same appeal as when Nellie ran it. So, the heir shut it down...

probably cinder block. The fire spread real quick then panic set in. It might have been wood though.

It's rather funny/impressive the clout Nellie had in her day. Local politicians consulted her, the garden clubs respected her,at least publicly.

Whats interesting is that was a well known band at the time. Shows you what kind of places Duke and the like would have to play at when if they were as famous today, we would be paying lots of money to see them at Carnegie Hall.

fricking Garden Club...

Oh hellll no. Elaborate. Haha. I don't have any particular stories but it would never surprise me of some shady bullshite they've done, particularly back in the days pre 1960s.

The Great White one. I'll never forget this. When it first hit the news they showed the moments of everyone just before the band. Very sad
Shocking just how fast things went from "wait a minute, that isn't part of the show" to the whole building being engulfed in flames and smoke.
Terrible to watch and I can't imagine the confusion of looking for a friend or loved one through all of that.

That wasn't even the original miss Nellie. She would ride around town in a big lincoln with a car full of girls. The guy she was arguing with was a black guy. He was mad because she wouldn't allow him in there.

The little article below about the boiler explosion is also interesting. Race of the victims noted in the first paragraph, today's media won't even identify the race of perps committing a crime when it might be relevant to finding them. Oh, and note that they published the victim's SSN. Bank fraud hadn't taken off yet.

Those numbers weren't used for everything as they are today either.
