It was 75 years ago that over 200 people died in a Natchez nighclub fire.

No mention of it in the media but I came across these headlines while digging through newspapers yesterday.

It is sorta brutal. Sounds like a tagline from an old exploitation film poster.

The Jackson Daily News was a pretty racist paper.

The nightclub owner boarded up the windows so no one could watch from outside or sneak in. Same reason he padlocked the back door. Allegations were made the white police chief took bribes to allow him to do it.

Then the roof was metal and covered with spanish moss intentionally put on the roof. It was sprayed with a chemical to keep the bugs away or kill them.

Band was nationally known. Walter Barnes.

I'm piqued by the usage of the term holocaust in 1940

Seems it wouldn't yet be part of American vernacular

That is still the second largest nightclub disaster in American history. Newspaper writers were much more colorful back then. Holocaust didn't have the same connotation it does now.

I thought I remember looking into origins of the word holocaust and didn't see much before hitler and gang came along

That newspaper would use words such as "Solons" to refer to leaders and "quiz" to refer to investigation.

It has something to do with mass purging by fire, IIRC

Reading the article........just how careless can someone be when lighting a cigarette to catch the building on fire?

spanish moss and chemicals.

This tragedy is the reason why Fire Marshalls raise hell over concerts and why the fire escape laws for clubs are written the way they are.
