The thread we had a while back about tipping hairstylist was out of control. I don't understand why tip a hairstylist. They are getting all of the money from the price of haircut

I agree tipping has gotten out of control even as I get a lot of my income from tips.
I go about my life with this simple rule: if your interaction with a business is mostly based on the service provided by an individual and they are paid less than what I think they should be paid by their company then I tip.
This includes waiters, hair stylist, etc.
The bad thing is that these conditions are HIGHLY subjective so the "rules of tipping" are far from written in stone.
Bottom line is that if I'd feel bad seeing what a person's check would look like after they did an exceptional job servicing me (haha) then I tip.
This doesn't include delivery people that deliver just finished goods like furniture. But if they did.some extra shite that I asked for then I'll tip.

If you don't like to tip, then don't. I for one am okay with rewarding great service.
I don't mind tipping actual servers and bartenders, but we're at the point that dry cleaners have a tip jar.

Tips are (usually) a direct reflection of how good you are at that particular job.
The data does not support your assertion.
From the links I provided:

But as it turns out, waiters see only a teeny, tiny bump in tips when they do an exceptional job compared to a mediocre one (one estimate puts the variation at a 2% difference).

Quality of service has a laughably small impact on tip size. According to a 2000 study, a customer’s assessment of the server’s work only accounts for between 1 and 5 percent of the variation in tips at a restaurant.

"Since women restaurant workers living off tips are forced to rely on customers for their income rather than their employer, these workers must often tolerate inappropriate behavior from customers, co-workers, and management," the report says. "This dynamic contributes to the restaurant industry's status as the single largest source of sexual harassment claims in the U.S."

Why? Why not tip the cashier at Target?

When I went to France and Belgium, I noticed people didn't worry about tipping. There's basically no tipping in Belgium and in France it was already on your bill as a flat rate and there's no worrying about whether or not to tip more or less, or who to tip. If the employee makes tips then its already an item on your bill. This method of doing business is so much easier and straightforward.
Do you think eateries in France and Belgium are of poor quality or are lacking in service? Do you think that people are less intelligent in Belgium?

Hereafter question you should be asking yourself:
If I'm spending money on extravagant things such as a meal At a resteraunt (yes that is an extravagance) then why am I sweating by a buck?
That's the big problem with tipping nowadays. People spending money they shouldn't then sweating the small shite.

Tipping is fine
Other people caring how you or I tip is the bigger problem
Everyone mind their own business and all will be ok.

So you avoided answering a rational question. Why don't you tip cashiers? How about workers at hardware stores who help you find things?
Seriously, I want to know why it is socially acceptable to not tip these people but it is socially unacceptable to not tip people who bring you furniture or who put your food in a bag and sell it to you.

Or, maybe people thinking that waiting tables is a career.
It's an extra cash job, unless you're at commanders or Ruth's.

Servers and bartenders are getting tips from me for certain (based on performance of service of course). I also tip the woman who cuts my hair, but I know her (she runs her own business) and she does a phenomenal job.
Everyone else will generally get the round up of change for my order if it's take out or something cashier related.

If you're spending money on "extravagant things" at Best Buy then you should tip. Right? Don't buy that TV if you can't afford to tip.

The problem is restaurants pay servers below the minimum wage because they count on tips getting them above that limit. Also, yes you tip the to go person because in most restaurants they are a server that is forced to man the to go station for that shift. They are usually paid the same as the servers and count on tips to get them above the minimum wage. Also, the kitchen doesn't box and bag all that food you ordered, usually the to go server does it. It's not expected that you tip 15%, but a few bucks on top gets that server through a really shitty shift is nice.

All they need is money for gas and cigs.
They're not paying a mortgage.
