Teacher fired for drinking in NOLA

A high school choir teacher has lost her job after having 2 1/2 drinks in New Orleans, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports. She was leading a school trip and chaperoning students at the time.
Carol Burton said the Seattle superintendent's decision wasn't fair: "For some reason those two drinks seem to be more important than 14 years of service."
In addition, Burton let male and female students hang out in each other's hotel rooms, contrary to policy. Parent chaperones are not supposed to drink on field trips, but the nightly chaperone meetings were held in the hotel bar, according to a report in the Seattle Times.

Good thing she didn't have Bill Cosby as a mentor.

To her, they obviously were

The drinking isn't as much of a big deal as her allowing students of the opposite sex to be in the same hotel room, especially if they were unsupervised.
Still, she really shouldn't have been drinking, imo.

Sounds like a cool teacher. 10 years ago they may have let it slide, but not these days

Wow.
Somebody snitched, or was out to get her. That's ridiculous.

Dumb. It's after hours without kids around. I don't see the problem. Are they going to start punishing the adults for opening the minibar in their bedroom before bed too?

Shouldn't have been drinking in front of the kids...
Man, I'd love to hear her answer from now on when someone asks her if she's ever been to New Orleans.

Those kids are all fricked in the head now, bc their choir teacher had a couple drinks. Nobody wants to think of the children anymore.

If these meeting were after curfew, I don't see a real issue. But I was one of the cub scout dads with a flask of rum labeled "soap", so I may be biased.

I see a problem; you have to supervise this.

Well i would have made an A+ if i got to go into the felmales rooms.
She should be fired. Parents drinking, she is drinking, and not supervising

This is not a typical HS choir. They have professional facilities, travel all over the place, and make their own recordings. It's a big, big deal. Quincy Jones is a Garfield High alum, and the auditorium is named after him, so I assume he's a financial backer. LINK

You left out part of the story...
She's an adult, made adult decisions, faces adult consequences. Such is life.
quote:because Burton believed he was gay and not letting him hang out with girls was "discriminatory" because he was uncomfortable hanging out with the boys; therefore, no enforcement of the rules of not having students of the opposite sex in others rules.
The Seattle school district may share some of the responsibility for what happened on a Garfield High School field trip during which two teenage girls were allegedly groped by a male classmate

Another case of "Why do the rules have to apply to me?" Move along.

Burton told the school system that "she didn't feel comfortable stopping the mostly parent chaperones — who had each paid $1,800 to be on the trip — from drinking," according to the Seattle Times.
Legit concern. One adult confronting another adult about drinking. Were the adults required to sign an agreement before going, that said they would refrain from drinking the entire time?
However, as a teacher, she knew what the rule was. She had drinks. She should not have had drinks. Rules are rules. And honestly, this rule makes some sense.
Also, if the chaperone meeting was held in the hotel bar, who was watching the students at that time?
