Yeah, if you're going to Blackwash a character, clearly Reed Richards. I'm sure they'd have a problem with the Thing being blackwashed since he probably only appears as a person for like 30 minutes in the film or less, but make him the lead in the movie sounds fine. Instead they've got to take a minute and a half in the film's running time to explain how Sue Storm is related to Johnny. If you have to explain something like that, then it's not worth the blackwash.

Pretty much everyone involved in the film has been quick to argue that the decision to cast a white actress (Mara) and a black actor (Jordan) as brother and (adopted) sister is a sign of cultural progress. And that may well be the case. But if you’re going to make that argument, perhaps you shouldn’t have the white kid be the do-everything-right academic superstar and the black kid be the disobedient, chip-on-his-shoulder lawbreaker. Just a thought.

Yeah, I don't think that any of the actors on this film are going to suffer from starring in this movie, but Trank is fricked. This is a career ending movie for the film maker.

Half in the Bag's Review of it
They didn't trash it nearly as much as I thought they would. They actually had some good things to say about it, but still don't recommend it.
Blamed a lot of the bad stuff on the studio. They did mention Trank being a huge a-hole but they still said watching the movie made them feel bad for him.
They do say when you have characters with silly powers, you shouldn't go for a dark movie.
"Little kids will not enjoy this movie whatsoever and it's boring for adults."

Bc it's not nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. It's certainly not a good movie, but never does it approach the depravity of say Catwoman or Crystal Skulls. I saw it today.
The casting isn't nearly the problem some are making it out to be. Who cares if Sue is adopted or Johnny is black. The problem has been discussed here. The first 2/3 is boring and subdued, the final act is rushed and confusing.
I'll agree with the poster who said it should've not been a F4 movie but just a new creation. Bc it never felt like the Fantastic Four, never even resembled them til the last 5 minutes. A strange movie but I've certainly seen worse. We all have, except it's fun to be hyperbolic I guess.

I don't doubt that, had Marvel owned the rights to The Fantastic Four, that Age of Ultron would have revolved around Latveria instead of Sokovia, which would have REALLY set the stage for Civil War.

‘Fantastic Four’ Lacks Superpowers at Box Office
quote:Superhero fatigue? More like Fox superhero fatigue. Now Fox's frick up is starting to get the media to bash superhero films. Not to mention the negative impact it's having on real Marvel films (Disney). I was surprised when I found out that there are still many people out there who think all Marvel movies are made by the same studio.
LOS ANGELES — 20th Century Fox’s big-budget “Fantastic Four” went down in flames at the weekend box office, adding to fears about superhero fatigue and calling into question Hollywood’s willingness to hire novice directors for major films.

How bad is the latest effort to establish a cinematic franchise out of Marvel Comics’ iconic super-group the Fantastic Four? Well, it’s the worst to date—which is a substantial achievement, given the low quality of the (unreleased) 1994 Roger Corman adaptation and the let’s-test-drive-Chris-Evans-as-a-superhero films released in 2005 and 2007. This iteration, directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle) is a dull, sour, claustrophobic mess: 80 minutes of tedious origin story followed by 20 minutes of more-tedious-still climax.

Of course we've all seen worse. This year alone, we had Hot Pursuit and Aloha, two films that played like 1980's straight to video disasters that were somehow cast with Academy Award level actors. I'd see this Fantastic Four film repeatedly in the theaters before I'd see those two films again.

So they're damned for being PC and casting a black actor in a white role and damned for not being PC enough to adjust that role so that he's not a drag racing hot-head (as was the original character).

Why would they think otherwise? The general public aren't even aware that the Star Wars films are now made by Disney. They'll sense that something is off when the new movie starts in the theaters, but many won't realize that's what's missing is the Fox Studios fanfare prior to the John Williams theme.

Fox did not grab any right
There is a large difference between the original purchase and putting out a movie at the 11th hour to make sure the grip of IP rights remain.
How you're so oblivious to the fact that this movie was a rights grab is quite comical.

remove all references to the film on their site, and to replace the focus on the X-Men with a focus on The Inhumans were made by artists, then you're being incredibly naive.
As opposed to having EVERY OTHER NON MARVEL STUDIOS mentioned on their site including every other Fox-Marvel movie that's been released.
Marvel doesn't want to be associated with this movie, yet because it's their IP-that is liscenced out to Fox,the general audience thinks Marvel put out a shite product, not Fox-Marvel-who's history of doing so is proven.
and you X fanboys always complaining about the Inhumans as if they haven't been in Marvel lore for 50 years.
Talk about being threatened. The Inhumans started getting a stronger push in the late 90s and Black Bolt in particular has been in the center of Marvel's story telling for the last 15 years.Marvel has made strong attempt to flesh out all corners of their library since the turn of the century.

If you think that the decision to kill the FF comic,
Marvel is in the midst of telling the greatest F4 story of all time-Secret Wars. The comic and IP in general has seen dwindling sales ever since the release of the first Foxtastic movie
If you think breaking up the F4 (because the characters are still around) isn't a direct response to the shite treatment that this IP is getting from Fox-you're a fool.
quote:
he fans have been suffering from Marvel's mistakes since Stan ran off Jack and Steve.
Give me a break with that shite. Stan Lee might have had conflict with those guys, but he also brought in a TON of talent in the late 60s-early 80s. Including Claremont.

It's not the world against Marvel and their fans. Marvel's greed and pettiness has done just as much damage as any outside force.
Said in the face of a studio that put out a shite movie to hold onto licensing.
but hey keep giving this movie, the studio and the director credit while the rest of the world sees it for what it is.

So, did we destroy Trank's career? I don't feel too bad, seeing as how we likely added years to his life. He won't have nearly as much money to spend on drugs now.
Or maybe we killed him, because now he'll have to settle for cheaper drugs.

This, Johnny Storm once gave his girlfriend flame on powers-he's a VD carrier.
It's racist as shite to make Johnny the black one.

He's done that all by himself. He's certainly not cut out for Twitter.
If he would've owned his mess instead denying it over and over and over, or not blaming the studio, his career might have a shot.
He's not like Kevin Smith who is at least a writer.
Max Landis wrote Chronicle. Trank helped, but that was mostly him.
Trank needs total control, has burned his bridge with Fox and Kinberg who is tied in with Disney. maybe WB would hire him.
Posted on 8/10/15 at 9:55 am to RonBurgundy
No one is going to hire Trank on any major project any time soon. He's bitten the hands that have fed him, on his second film no less. He somehow lucked into doing Chronicle over a YouTube video, and was one of the youngest directors ever to have made a film go #1 in the box office, along the lines of Speilberg and Cameron. So people were giving him a chance, thinking he might be the next Speilberg or Cameron. Those two do not bite the hands that feed them and are respectable on set. Trank is supposedly a nightmare to deal with and hasn't proven he's overwhelmingly talented yet. It's not as if he made the Sixth Sense as his debut. Chronicle, while good, is no masterpiece. That tweet more than anything will screw his career, at least for the foreseeable future.

It's not a rights grab. They already have the rights. They're not taking them from anyone. They have the right to put out films to retain those rights.
It's the same reason that DC continuously put out Wonder Woman comics, even in times when it would've made sense to take them out of publication for a while. If they'd stopped publishing the comic, the rights would've reverted to the estate of the William Marston. Eventually they purchased the rights outright.
It's the same reason that Marvel has kept their Captain Marvel in print. They grabbed the name while the original Captain Marvel was out of print, and have to keep a Captain Marvel character going or the name can return to it's original character at DC.
Was Wonder Woman a "rights grab" for all of those decades? Is Marvel's Captain Marvel a "rights grab"?
Was Marvel in the wrong for creating She-Hulk and Spider-Woman, just to keep other companies from having the rights?
Marvel, DC, and TV and film studios have been retaining rights by keeping characters in media for a century. I'm not sure why you'd think that Fox is suddenly the bad guy for doing it as well.

Saw it yesterday with the family. My daughter is 9 and my son is 6. Both said immediately after the movie they liked it better than Ant-man.
I didn't think it was that bad. Doom was probably too powerful, and the action came down to one scene would be by only real complaints. That said I never read the comics and all I have to go off of is the other two movies.
