Saw Vacation on Tuesday night. Wasn't planning on seeing it, at least not in theaters, but a friend of mine is in it and she insisted we get a group together and watch it. I went in with extremely low expectations - based off of previews and preliminary RT ratings which at the time it was at 11%.

Have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Once I tabled the idea of comparing it to the original and just watching it on its own I really had a good time. Laughed out loud at least a dozen times. It bounces back and forth between smartly written jokes/scenes and some real duds and overreach. Overall I was happy with the final product, Ed Helms played the part well. Chris Hemsworth's storyline was pretty hilarious. And there were a few gags that really worked to balance out the toilet humor and shock stuff that I didn't think worked.

Worth a matinee ticket price IMO.

The preview looks like constant lazy physical nonhumor with 0 witty writing.

Is that accurate?

There is some of that absolutely. But all-in-all I think the finished product is better than simply lowbrow physical comedy. There's funny scenes not in the preview that work really well.

I'm not emotionally invested in the first one and the previews look kinda funny so I might check this out. The mostly terrible reviews are a turn off though.

My wife didn't really care for it outside of a couple scenes. I think it definitely appeals to a person with a certain type of personality / sense of humor. I'd say if you like 40 Year Old Virgin and Hot Tub Time Machine you'd enjoy Vacation. It's not The Great Outdoors or Airplane, but it's better than the stoner comedies of recent memory a la Superbad or Pineapple Express .. and a nice reprieve from the Judd Apatow snoozefests.

Meh, I don't like most comedies anyway and I will watch almost no modern ones. I miss the cleverness of the ole 80s comedies where the filmmakers could trust the audience to not be brain dead idiots.

I saw the movie in theaters as well and I thought it absolutely sucked. There was a ridiculous amount of toilet humor in the movie.

I thought that it was great. Hit all the right notes for humor and nostalgia.

Helms did much better than I expected.

AH - but they're not asking me to come see a wacky new family vacation product. They're asking me to watch the new Vacation movie. And I say, "No thank you."

(Seriously, though, glad you don't feel it was wasted money or that your experience wasn't ruined by comparing it to the original.)

Wow - a barrage of imagery there.

And, like everything else, results very:

40 Year Old Virgin? Never finished it.

HT Time Machine? Made it 10 or 12 minutes, maybe. Really unfunny to me.

The Great Outdoors

I know it is beloved, but "Meh".

Airplane

Obviously one of the best comedies of all time - initially started the modern campy/satire/parody film craze.

Superbad

I really liked (maybe not loved, but really liked) this film.

Pineapple Express

I don't get it. Not funny.

So, I'm all over the place on your barometers, baw.

It would have been mentioned by now if Christina Applegate pays an homage to Beverly D'Angelo and drops her top so I'm guessing that's a no.
