So our past few offseasons have just been absolutely terrible

it's hard to wrap my mind around how many errors, misteps, and general frickups our management has engaged in the past few years
our drafting was mediocre at best, and saved from bad/terrible due to drafting a few late gems. all 3 of those gems are off the team
2 of those gems got big deals before getting dealt, both completely crippling our cap this year
we have had to dump other productive players and eat dead money (a lot less than jimmy/junior) due to bad cap management. sproles, grubbs, etc fall into this category.
we gave a huge deal to a safety who sucked and got hurt, and this, along with the other dead money, prevent us from addressing all the holes we face due to "cap cuts" and bad drafting.
our receiving core is a combination of young, a mess, and completely unproven, with one ancient/expensive guy left
if we didn't completely nail our defensive drafting, and if they're not ready to contribute from day one, we may have a shite show on that side of the ball next year. our LBs are legitimately a major question mark and we have no proven pass rusher who isn't a major medical risk on our team. without a legit edge rusher, a 3-4 is a terrible defense.
how hot is our management after this year if everything doesn't fall into place and we waste another of the very few years of brees that we have left? i mean i could see brees playing good-great for another 2-ish years, but at any moment he could fall off. we've completely wasted 2 of his remaining years and losing another this year would be absolutely terrible.

I really really want to disagree with you, but for the most part I can't

i'm not being a dick here. last year started with hope and then quickly became a complete failure
it exposed a ton of issues with our roster choices, drafting, free agency moves, etc
then that shite show continued into the offseason and somehow got worse.
i mean we literally have a guy who was a defensive cornerstone 2 weeks ago putting our whole team on blast in social media
and we have a guy who was seen as an offensive cornerstone and our offensive future traded to a conference rival as an afterthought and cheap acquisition for them. i mean we strengthened what used to be the team we knew we'd meet up with in the playoffs because of our ineptitude.
that shite is surreal at this point

Why does OP fail to at least mention assets returned in assets departed? Max Unger, Dannell Ellerbe, Stephone Anthony, PJ Williams, Tyler Davison, Cap Space, oh "byrd sucks"... playa please, he was coming into his own as soon as he got hurt... byrd will be fine.

Pretty much since 2011, this team has been steadily fricking up in the offseason, a lot of being problems off the field with the coaching staff and players.

Drafting has been puzzling to bad, with many people on this forum drafting better in mock drafts than paid professionals. Last year was so abysmal that thankfully some heads did rolls as a result of it, especially the scouting department.

crippling our cap this year
Eh, our cap is crippled every year but Saints still make things happen. I can't say I disagreed with any of their offseason movies for this year, and there were some big arse moves to try to right this team.

Losing Sproles wasn't that big of a deal in the long run. He wasn't that great his last year with us, and then ended up getting hurt in Philly. Spiller is much better than Sproles and should be great in this offense. And Grubbs? He wasn't very good either his last year here. I expect our O-line to be much improved with Unger anchoring it down.

The defense as a whole sucked last year, and Byrd was abysmal but I still have high hopes for him. He was a stud for many years in Buffalo and he didn't just stop becoming a stud. Also doesn't help the secondary when we generate absolutely zero pass rush and QB's have all time to sit back and pick us apart. We saw that on many last second drives where we lost.

Pretty negative way of looking at it. I definitely agree it is unproven. Colston is Colston. Cooks should be a playmaker for us. Toon played well at the end of the season. A healthy Brees with a good o-line will make average receivers look like studs. He has done this his entire career.

Agree here, but I do think we nailed it as we drafter high character players who were productive in college. Can only wait and see, and hope for the best.

My guess would be very hot if this team underperforms like it did last year. And not just on the field, but in the locker room as well. If this season is at all like last year, I see one more year for Payton and Loomis, and then blowing the entire thing up and praying there is a Luck-like QB waiting for us when we draft #1.
But then again, it's the NFL and this team could go on and win the Super Bowl this year. Anything can happen, and that's why you have to love the NFL

ellerbe isn't proven so he had an injured year and is no longer "consistent".... oh ok. we're going to sit here and moan and groan about a departure of grubbs. Jimmy was a philosophical change which returned two immediate high impact starters. Junior was an all out mistake. Evidently he had an attitude problem that got worse and his actions are pretty evident that his presence is no longer a positive influence for our team. His talent isnt' worth the garbage he brings to the locker room. We have young WR talent. Obviously something was going on behind scenes with Stills, still brought us good return value.
Talent only takes you so far in this league. Chemistry goes further.

been saying this for a while. Read my thread from yesterday, and see how many people are still delusional.

Signing Graham and Galette only to trade/release them the next year were really the two huge frick ups. Just a lot of wasted dead money. The other bad mistake as a group has been bad drafting. The draft is kind of a crap shoot though, so that at least can be somewhat understandable.
Grubbs, Sproles, Lofton, whoever are aging vets who are better to get rid of now rather than later when they become truly bad. Sproles probably has more left in him than those other two. The deficiencies of the other two were really starting to already show. With a little luck Anthony has potential to already be an upgrade to Lofton in year 1.
Byrd seems like he was maybe used incorrectly early last year. Maybe part of that was Vacarro playing poorly. I don't know. Then the injury happened. That was just bad luck. We'll see this year if spending that much money on him ends up being a frick up in hindsight.

Agree with this. Saints got into a position where they had talented players that affected the locker room and production on the field.
Just a bad gamble, but I can live with taking a step back one year to right the ship

Wasn't Ireland the hot seat move? Old Man Benson isn't looking to change horses this near the end, if anything it seems like Loomis/Lauscha are as up front and in control as ever. I suppose Payton could become the fall guy, but I'm not so sure we're to that point yet, even with everything you pointed out.

OP has some legitimate gripes for sure.
but do you even Spiller bro!!

graham was not a bad deal, just a change in his attitude in locker room imo and a change of direction. We got good value for him.
victor butler got hurt, got good production out of bunkley, lofton, grubbs, ben watson, rafael bush, juniors original 3 yr deal and some other players. keenan lewis was a slam dunk signing.
every team has a few negatives, there's a few extenuating circumstances here but right the fricking ship, and thats what they are trying to do. cap penalty cost doesn't take W's off the scoreboard.

quote:What? Ellerbe has sucked since he left Baltimore and is a reclamation project. Davison is not even a given to make the team and Williams is a potential solid backup. We actually lost cap space in the deals we made. Byrd was never coming into his own last year. He pretty much was a disappointment since day 1. However, I do have very high hopes for him to bounce back.

Say what you will but Goodell effectively and at a minimum shrunk our window to the SB.
Managements decisions would likely have been easier has Goody not done that.
Nonetheless. management has made some bad decisions but hindsight is 20/20

Obviously the OP forgot about all those fun QB challenges from their resort stay last year. LINK
