They posted something about going over, which would have been exceptionally poor judgment. But even if they didn't go over, some terrible weather came from west to east that afternoon. I'm thinking they were outside the inlet and just got hit by some bad squalls a few miles out and found trouble. One of the 2 life jackets was still on the boat. Again, just terrible news.

I agree that your theory is most likely
I go offshore in my 19' boat all the time, and have been scared many times but never in real danger. no matter how big your boat though if you go out enough it's just a matter of time before you get puckered somehow

Terrible deal, 14 is pretty young for solo outings if that nature. Hope they get lucky and find em

No. The Coast Guard found the boat with 1 life jacket still on board. That does not indicate how many life jackets were on board when they launched.
