It was what it was but I loved it personally.

That pretty much covers it. As I recall, the main uproar at the time wasn't that it was a bad movie, per se. It was that Arnold had gotten too big for his britches by engaging in self-parody. I wasn't that old at the time, but I got a pretty good picture of why the adults were all so upset. It was actually kind of weird, in retrospect. People were bitching that engaging in a meta performance about his own career was just plain hubris on Arnold's part and people refused to accept the commentary because of that. Nowadays, it would go over much better than it did back then.

Commercial flop or not, it was a great movie.

Yes, it was a major spoof of action movies but it had a senselessly serious edge such as the kid getting mugged in his house.
That scene made no sense.

"Last Action Hero" is one of my favorite movies. It is misunderstood genius. It combines an immediately likable villain, torches every movie cliche (literally), has great action, sees Arnold make fun of himself for the first time, the best "Hamlet" parody of all time, Tywin Lannister being a badass, oh and a pretty interesting plot with real world consequences for failure.

Just going to say I'd watch a Hamlet remake with early 90's Arnold.
And I love this movie.

And for the parents who have been critical of the violence in my movies I just want to say that we only kill 83 people in this movie, down from the last film in which we killed 197.

BTW can we all take time to appreciate the awesomeness that was the soundtrack for this movie? AC/DC, Megadeth, Cypress Hill, etc.

there are also 2 issues
1. this was a big budget action movie promoted like a big budget action movie (to hilarious extent in some cases, like using a fricking rocket launched into space). it wasn't a big budget action movie and could never make those sorts of returns. it was just doomed to failure based on budget alone
2. it went head-up with Jurassic Park (which came out 1 week prior and was a generation-shifting movie). it lost

I saw it at the theater.
Liked it.
Most people and just about all critics hated it.

I've always loved it.
"May I speak to the drug dealer of the house, please?"
"I know I am. I'm the famous comedian Arnold Braunschweiger."
"Schwarzenegger!"
"Gesundheit"
And Charles Dance's plot was pretty brilliant. Movie villains can't win in the movie world so bring the worst ones to the real world and wreak havoc. I would have loved to see that play out more in the finale though, but we did get Death and Jack the Ripper.
