Shaq saying Mickey and Martin should have stayed another year.

He was on 104.5 this morning. I've always thought Martin was NBA ready, but Mickey is the guy getting all the praise from his play in summer league. I know it's just summer league, but does Shaq know what he is talking about, or should he stick to playing basketball (or retirement)?

Shaq knows if they would have stayed, We would have been a favorite to win a title.

Well, his current job is a NBA analyst. That doesn't necessarily make him a good talent evaluator, but he's atleast operating within the scope of his current job description.
I think both players could have benefited from another year in college But the advantages of being a professional, no 20 hour practice limit/access to pro coaches and trainers, can't be understated.

Everyone knows they should have stayed but they didn't so who cares.

If Mickey would have stayed we would almost be a final four lock. Martin kinda plays the same role as Simmons so it'd be interesting to see all three play at the same time on the court

Does Shaq know about basketball? Nah...

You could argue both ways. Martin was a first round pick, so it's tough to say he made the wrong decision. Plus, his numbers would have gone down next year with Simmons coming in. Martin is a good player with a chance to develop into a very good player. But Simmons is everything Martin is, just A LOT more skilled. Simmons basically would have taken Martin's role as a "stretch 4".
Mickey probably would have benefited from playing with Simmons, but the question is would his draft stock have increased much by staying one more year? I doubt it. He still would have had the same physical strengths/limitations next year. He maybe would have gone from an early 2nd round pick to a late first rounding, but that wouldn't have been a guarantee.
Hindsight being 20/20, it's hard to say either made the wrong decision to leave

Shaw has one of the best head on his shoulders out of any athlete in the last few decades. He stayed an extra year despite being the #1 overall pick. Became a movie star, created businesses, tried to do a rap career...the dude is a bright bright guy.

The question whether Mickey and Martin would be better off in school for another year or better off on NBA teams this year will be a question we ask ourselves all year. The thing about it is there's no way to decide if the move they both made was right or wrong.
Personally, if they both are able to make an NBA roster and get some time, they made the right decision. From there, they will need to continue to be hungry and improve every day. With the way Rookie contracts are drawn up, the big money comes from second contracts anyway, so they will need to improve themselves.
I don't think another year of college basketball would prepare them for their second contracts as much as being with an NBA team, but you have to make that NBA team so you can really learn what it's like to be in the NBA.

If they both would have stayed Johnny Jones would have been run out of town if we at least didn't make the final four.
Martin and Mickey on a team with Simmons, Blakeney Hornsby, Quarterman, Patterson, Victor, etc...would have been straight unfair.
Martin probably was where he was going to be at to be drafted, Mickey left too early. If he would have dominated a whole year like he was capable of he wouldnt have had to use the NBA-predraft to build the majority of what stock he had up after a terrible ending to what was a good season.

It's the best of the morning show all this week because they are on vacation.
That interview was from months ago and at the time he was probably right; however, in hindsight, Martin got a guaranteed contract and I don't know that Mickey improves his stock much more and went early 2nd round and did well with Boston in summer league.

Wasn't that a replayed segment from last month or something?

I don't agree with this at all. Simmons is a phenomenal passer, that will be able to create space and open shots. He will be a point forward. Nothing like Martin at all.

You do know that, was a "best of" show. That interview was from right after they declared. Of course hindsight is 20/20 but that's how shaq felt back then.

That interview was given before the summer. They are playing the best of Culotta and Ponamsky all this week.
