the only way I would say it could be called a gateway drug is b/c authorities have lied for so long about what happens to you when you smoke it that a kid might get high and be like "Gee, I didn't turn into a violent sex crazed maniac, I didn't see colors or hallucinations, and I didn't stop giving a shite about the world around me... What other drugs have they been blatantly lying about?"

Just my opinion but from reading that article it doesn't conclude that it's a gateway drug for everyone that uses it.
It's a website for a company that does online substance prevention. I'd take it with a grain of salt.

I died the first time I tried pot, now I've built up a tolerance.

No. It's government propaganda

Milk is the gateway. Every person who smokes mary jane, started with milk first.
The gateway argument is ridiculous. Every person using drugs probably started with booze which would be the real gateway.
Once someone breaks the law to smoke weed, that is what opens the gateway. Once you break the law, the genie is out of the bottle and thus it is easier to move to something stronger.

Which chemical is it in weed that causes you to try hard drugs?

statistics say that those (ages 12-17) who use marijuana are 85 times more likely to explore a "harder" drug than kids who do not use pot.
Holy cow. Kids who smoke weed at 12 years old are more likely to get into other drugs. Wow. Never would have guessed that badass or troubled childhood kids might be more prone to get into worse drugs

I had a fantastic childhood, but still smoked pot and drank my first beer at 13 because...well, I was a curious little frick.

I think that's a valid argument and it's probably a significant factor, but it may not be the whole story.
However, that thought is in contradiction to your first statement:

The gateway argument is ridiculous.
Of course, if the illegality is the only factor that makes it a "gateway drug", then making it legal negates that argument, as I'm sure you're prepared to comment.
My own opinion is that I don't know if it is or isn't a chemical gateway, but it probably is somewhat of a psychological gateway because of it's stigma as an illegal substance.
Nevertheless, those who are invested in minimizing the negative aspects of marijuana use are mostly full of hot air. Their strongest point is that the over-stigmatization/vilification of marijuana has been disproportionate to the facts and certainly so in comparison with other intoxicants, such as alcohol. Their tendency to overstate the negatives of alcohol undercuts their overall point.

We were told in DARE that Pot was just as bad as the really hardcore drugs. Then you try pot and your like "this is the bees knees!!!" and "what else have they been lying to us about?" Creates a suspicion of doubt and is more harmful than the truth.
quote:
Cross sensitivity is defined as sensitivity to one substance that renders an individual sensitive to other substances of similar chemical structure. In Layman's terms: When a teenager dabbles with marijuana on a regular basis, their body builds up a tolerance to its effects. When the same high can no longer be achieved using pot alone, the likelihood that they will move on to a harder substance (like cocaine or heroin) increases dramatically. The addictive nature of marijuana can segue into tolerance, often leading to the use of other illicit drugs. In this sense, marijuana certainly can be a gateway drug. However, the only certainty is that the outcomes vary based on the individual, their circumstances, and a multitude of other factors.
Can only speak for myself, but bullshite. I got just as high the last time I smoked pot (years ago) as I ever did. Never once did I smoke and think to myself, "this isn't getting the job done, I better go find some heroin."
quote:
There is no black-and-white answer when it comes to the question of marijuana being a gateway drug
Because it isn't. Some people like to experience different things. Some people bungee jump and never do anything high adrenaline again. Others enjoy it so much they start jumping out of airplanes and go mountain climbing.
This guy is stupid.

The drug is not the gateway. The drug dealer is the gateway. Most kids dont start out smoking crack or shooting heroin but they are introduced to the black market through marijuana. If the black market for marijuana is closed that may stop them from being introduced to harder drugs via their illegal dealers.

I understand this argument, but in my experience next to no pot dealers ever sell anything else. Your heady bro down the street isn't sitting on a bunch of rock.

I started smoking pot around 17 and I guess it was a gateway drug in the fact that I hung out with kids that liked drugs and pot/alcohol were just some of them. I knew that there was a difference between a little weed and prescription pills and other things like that. It's just up to the person to decide how far they wanna take it.
