After I finally started to "get" Miles Davis and the more progressive jazz, I could never really go back to the "aww shucks, massa" Dixieland shite unless it's live or in an appropriate venue.
I also hate the new brass bands - I appreciate them for keeping jazz alive with younger people, but they suck IMO.
"Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis is the standard bearer of "Jazz" like no other album is for any other genre of music.
I tried to get into Trombone Shorty but he's like everybody else - 10% of his songs are great, 10% of his songs are good, and 80% of his songs are absolute crap.

Charles Mingus-Blues and Roots, Oh Yeah are two I've been jammin' on lately
Weather Report-Mysterious Traveler, Heavy Weather, and 8:30(live) are great.

A lot of Miles recommended. You would be remiss not to check out In a Silent Way, and the Jack Johnson tribute.

Anything by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. The Billie Holiday and Lester Young recordings. For some added Louis Armstrong, try Satch Plays Fats and Louis Armstrong plays W.C. Handy.
